35% Supreme Arcanist of Time and Space / Chapter 28: Inexplicable Things

Chapter 28: Inexplicable Things

The door to the bathroom was closed, but Kai knew it wouldn't matter. That mysterious person inside the dorm was a powerful Arcanist.

Kai held on into his pocket-watch, feeling a strange energy merge with his body. He didn't know what to do with it.

'Focus, focus.'

It was hard for him to keep focus knowing that his friend was dead. But he had to do it, or else he would be next. Kai closed his eyes and concentrated.

The mana from his body flew into the pocket-watch. It was a slow process, and he didn't know if he would have enough time do it before the person opened the door.

Slowly, the bathroom's door opened, and the cloaked figure stopped in front of it, staring at Kai. It slowly walked toward him, and a male voice echoed, "You were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both of you."

Kai hid his pocket-watch and he kept channeling his mana into it while talking to the person.

"Why are you doing this? Are you with the other cloaked figure that appeared in the forest two months ago? Or with the guard in the abandoned watch-tower?" Kai said.

Those were the strange things he had seen while inside Brainheart. The cloaked figure was surprised, "How do you know all of this? Did you see us?"

"Yes, I did. What are you up to? What do you want?" Kai yelled.

He was frustrated because of what had happened. The anger consumed him, and he wanted to teach the cloaked figure a lesson. Hell, he wanted to kill the cloaked figure for what it had done to Trevor!

But there was no way he could face the cloaked figure in combat. The only thing Kai could do was channel his mana into the pocket-watch and hope that it helped him somehow.

"I can't tell you that," the cloaked figure said in an annoyed tone, "Anyway, I need to kill you and get rid of the bodies. Your dorm is still important to me."

The hooded person started to channel mana into its wand. Kai looked at the figure, knowing that there was no way he would make it out alive. But then, something happened.

When he finished channeling all of his mana into the pocket-watch, everything around Kai became distorted, as if he was traveling through some kind of portal.

He couldn't comprehend what was happening around him, and the scenery started to change. It was no longer the bathroom but the bench he was sitting with Trevor one hour ago.

"I still need to read one more book and…" Trevor said, looking at Kai and noticing his strange expression, "Did something happen?"

It took a while for Kai to regain his senses completely, and when he saw where he was and the fact Trevor was alive, he understood what had happened.

'My pocket-watch made me travel one hour back in time! That's incredible!' he thought.

For a moment he wanted to hug his friend. The scene of Trevor getting cut in half was still fresh in his mind. He didn't do it, though. Trevor would see it as weird and start to ask questions.

"Uh, yeah, I'm fine," Kai said, "Just got lost for a moment thinking about my family."

The conversation continued for thirty minutes. It was mostly the same things Trevor had said the other time, and the same guard came to talk to them.

"Hey, you need to return to the dorm. It's midnight already."

"What?" Trevor said.

It was the same thing that happened the other time. Kai and Trevor got up from the bench and moved toward the dorm.

'I cannot go there because that person wants to do something inside our dorm! It even said the dorm is important!'

Kai's mind was racing, thinking about what he could do at that moment. The first thing he thought was to avoid returning to the dorm, and wait before going there.

"Hey, uh, wanna see something cool?" Kai asked.

Trevor was a little reluctant, "Maybe we should return to the dorm. We will be in trouble if the guard finds us."

"Come on! Don't you think it's exciting to do this?"

It didn't take long for Trevor to give in and go with Kai. The place he wanted to show him was the abandoned watchtower in that remote part of the school.

The watchtower was the first place Kai thought about. Nothing else came to his mind. It was his best chance of making them return late to their dorm that night.

They sneakily walked through the school, and once they got close enough to the watchtower, they both used the trees as cover.

"What's that?" Trevor asked.

Kai didn't tell him a word about what he saw, as that would get him into trouble, "No idea. It looks like an abandoned watchtower. I know that guards patrol this perimeter so going there is not a good idea."

"I bet. Maybe we can go inside someday when we become better Arcanists."

Trevor was curious to see what was inside — Kai was too — but going there without having the minimal knowledge about combat would be dangerous.

"Let's return to the dorm. The later it gets, the more guards will be roaming around," Trevor said.

Kai was still traumatized about returning to his dorm, but he had to. They walked back, meticulously, trying to avoid the guards. It was a miracle none of the guards found them.

When they were back at the dorm, Kai was the one going first to open the door. Once the door was open, Kai searched the room to see if the cloaked figure was still there.

"What are you doing?" Trevor asked, "Looking for ghosts?" he chuckled.

No one was inside the room, which calmed Kai's mind. He said, "I am looking for ghosts. Didn't you hear the stories about how this dorm is haunted?"

"Bullshit," Trevor said, rolling his eyes at the statement, "I need to crash. See you tomorrow."
