Chapter 14: Not Doing Something Crazy

Initially, what Dominic wanted to do was fill his entire basement with supplies and have a safe place to turn to in case of a large-scale disaster. Not far from his house, there was an emergency basement that was only there to give the appearance of having one in his house, but in reality, it was not used for anything.

As he thought about everything he was going to do, he would fill that basement with the weapons his uncle would send him and the rest with food. Knowing what would happen later on, he had to prepare food to survive years at home without even leaving. He needed suits to protect himself from biological attacks, masks, ventilation systems running twenty-four hours a day, and a system that purifies the air.

There were so many things that Dominic needed to analyze and place in his house as soon as possible. When it came to survival, his father had trained him since he was a child to never be intimidated and paralyzed in life-or-death situations.

But there were so many things that could end his life that he needed to be meticulous; he had to procure the necessary things to stay at home and survive those carriers of that strange virus that turned humans into undead, zombies, or beings trying to spread the virus to leave no one alive.

Dominic didn't have time to familiarize himself with the virus, which seemed a bit different from what he was familiar with; he didn't need to know more than its form or composition since he only wanted to know how it infects and the things he needed to worry about.

While the workers who had agreed to do the shopping and bring the carts to the checkout were working, Dominic took out his phone and started looking for a warehouse near home that he could use as a storage point in case things got out of control.

He had seen with his own eyes how these monsters could cause chaos in life, so it wouldn't be smart for him to barricade himself in one place. He didn't know when the virus thing could happen or how they planned to do it. However, he didn't want to confine himself to one place for the rest of his life, so he would have several points near home to store important things.

Therefore, looking at the houses being rented around his home, he started contacting the landlord to set a rate and start renting the house. For now, this is what Dominic would do: rent some houses according to his budget and fill the basements with resources, having a special support point in case things drag on even more.

The trick for others not to take his things was to hide in the basement, find rooms he could hide in, and fill them with things before moving on to the next house. Things would be that simple during the first week; all he had to do was buy a map and mark the places where he had safe houses.

After scheduling ten meetings for today, Dominic looked at the time and thought that if he rushed, he would be just in time for the meetings. In addition to that, he also contacted a man who had a warehouse a few streets from home that he wanted to try out.

The warehouse was extremely large from what he had seen, but the price was within Dominic's budget, so he scheduled a visit for tomorrow morning.

That warehouse was originally a place where fabric materials were stored, but it had been closed for a long time. As many businesses in this area were moving to the city, this warehouse had been completely empty and was actually of very good quality.

When Dominic discovered this warehouse, all the other houses he had contacted were temporarily forgotten. But since he now had the meetings, it would be better to attend and broaden his possibilities. The better the things he would have for the future, the more paths would open up in his life to live.

The warehouse owner was worried because he hadn't rented it for some time, but Dominic assured him over the phone that he wanted it, so he immediately made a transfer with the initial expenses to secure the place and told him that tomorrow he would make an official visit to have everything else arranged.

This place was a storage and work area; there were numerous trucks coming in and out, so there was nothing strange to worry about. If he brought food trucks to that place, there would be no suspicion of what he was bringing there.

Looking at the pictures, the only thing Dominic needed to work on were the security doors and fences around the warehouse. Everything else, he believed, was fine. He could easily store everything, from large water tanks to vans for mobility and many other things.

For now, he shouldn't go crazy, so immediately after, he would reject half of the houses he had agreed to visit. If he finished quickly here, he might go see them; if not, then maybe he would have time.

When Dominic least expected it, he saw several carts filled with things, so he immediately approached and paid for everything with his card. Two people outside had empty carts, so immediately those who arrived with full carts went to fill more.

Buying in this way might be a waste of time and money, but this was the only way to ensure the following days of shopping. That is, if something striking related to what his father warned him about happened in a few hours, then he would have enough resources to not worry for some time.

Probably all the food he was about to buy was not just for himself; he could use a large part of his warehouse to try to support the needy. There were exceptions and truly people who would need food, men willing to do anything to help a third party, and doctors working until their last days.

After half an hour, they had completely filled a truck, so Dominic said that if they finished in another half hour, he could pay them a big bonus. As time passed, many had created a plan to buy much faster and no longer needed to pay directly because, with the speed, the bill kept increasing.

In another half hour, both medium-sized trucks were filled with cardboard boxes full of products he had bought. Therefore, Dominic gave each of them two hundred dollars and asked for their contact number to be able to call them if he had work for them tomorrow.

Money was not something Dominic lacked, so he thought about hiring some kind of person to start cleaning the warehouse and sorting it into special zones.

At the end of the day, all Dominic needed was a place for himself to store resources. One week was more than enough to fill that warehouse with all the resources he would need later on.

By the time he finished doing everything, if it still fit in his budget to fill houses with supplies, he would think of some way to create shelter houses. Although hoping that the outbreak of this virus wouldn't happen was common, Dominic, now that he was preparing, if nothing happened at the end of the day, he wouldn't know how to react.

"Thank you very much for today; maybe I'll need your help to clean a warehouse." Dominic smiled calmly as he looked at the adults with a satisfied smile. Earning money may never have been so easy and strange before.

"Sir, no matter what job you need, we can handle it." A man spoke in fluent English while smiling.

Dominic nodded and said, "Very well, then we'll see each other tomorrow at the same job site as today."

When Dominic finished paying, he got into one of the trucks, and both headed back home much faster than expected. Maybe he could even meet with the warehouse owner.
