Chapter 2: The Musician

Weisheng returned to work after recuperating for a day. He had lost the case reports Liu Heng had entrusted to him. So, he stood outside Liu Heng's office, rethinking life decisions.

How nice would it be if he weren't a Prosecutor? He could continue his High School rock band in a random cafe. His heart would be content with singing his heart away with his three best friends and bandmates. But there was no looking back. He was already standing outside his superior's office.

He gulped his feelings away, hesitantly knocking on the door before entering.

"Mr. Liu," Weisheng walked to the desk and stood straight, "I have lost the case reports of the Gao Family-"

A flying file interrupted Weisheng, but he dodged it. He was used to having files thrown at him.

"Yuan Yuan," Liu Heng addressed him like a pet, "You better bring that report back, or I'll skewer your eyes."

Why did it have to be his eyes? Weisheng sighed under his breath.

"I will look for it," Weisheng lightly bowed to his direct superior.

"Then get to it!" Liu Heng screamed at him, turning around in his chair to look away.

That was Weisheng's call to leave Liu Heng alone. Weisheng quickly walked out of the room. He went to his cubicle to grab the remaining reports. He quickly went through the reports to get his facts straight.

The Gao Entrepreneurs had lost their only direct heir, Gao Bojing, in a mystery murder case. This case had been under investigation by Senior Prosecutor Liu Heng and his distrustful subordinates, one of whom happened to be Weisheng. They had almost found the culprit, but Weisheng had lost the files to a random burglar.

After getting his facts straight, Weisheng went to his apartment to investigate. He stood in his room and glanced everywhere. His room was a mess. He had tried to fight the burglar off. It didn't work well because Weisheng hadn't been the most promising student in P.E. in his childhood.

Then, he slowly traced his steps outside the main door. The burglar knew his passcode, so he was sure it was all planned.

Weisheng walked to the road where he had collided with the unlicensed truck. He looked at the poles around him and found a few CCTVs. Smiling in success, he quickly texted his trustworthy partner at the Police Station for the footage.

He received multiple footage containing that truck. After going through all of them, he finally had a destination.

Weisheng drove his car to the suspicious location. It was a junkyard, and the truck in question was parked outside the metal gates skeptically. Weisheng walked inside the junkyard with a handgun.

As he kicked the rusty metal gates open with his foot, he felt his legs trembling in fear. He exhaled deeply, trying to calm himself down.

Despite his solemn face, brown almond eyes, and dark brown hair with sharp facial structure, Weisheng was a scaredy-cat.

Weisheng mustered up all his courage and stepped further into the junkyard. All he could see was a bunch of auto scraps. He lowered his guard as it seemed abandoned.

Suddenly, he heard footsteps behind him. He quickly turned, pointing his gun behind him. However, there was no one there. He gulped, and his hands trembled.

The sun was still high up in the sky, yet the junkyard seemed dark. Weisheng took heavy breaths to calm himself. He shook his head, reminding himself that he had to find the missing reports. Knowing Liu Heng, he would undoubtedly skewer Weisheng's eyes upon failure.

Weisheng walked further into the junkyard when he suddenly heard footsteps again. He turned his gaze here and there, his gun moving in harmony with his eyes. However, there was no one in the junkyard other than him.

"Mr. Yuan~" Weisheng quickly turned around as he heard a child's voice humming his name. His eyes widened, searching for the origin of the voice. Suddenly, he felt someone tapping on his shoulders. He turned around with a jolt, only to find himself alone.

"W-Who is there?" Weisheng asked hesitantly. His feet trembled. The gun in his hands lowered in fear.

"Mr. Yuan~" Weisheng felt little arms wrapping around his legs. He gulped, not wanting to look down.

But his instincts pushed him to look down at the little boy holding his leg with his head down.

"Whose kid are you?" Weisheng asked after seeing a helpless child, "Are you lost? Where are your parents?"

The child suddenly looked up to reveal his face. He had no eyes, and his face was rotting away. Weisheng took a moment to process it before screaming his lungs out. He jolted his leg here and there but the creepy kid held onto it for dear life.

"Help me!" Weisheng shouted, hearing his voice echoing back to him.

Suddenly, a group of women dressed in white clothes walked up to him. Except they weren't there for his help. They all had no eyes, with their skin rotting and tearing apart.

Weisheng screamed even louder when the creepy ladies tried to grab onto him. He felt his consciousness slowly drifting away.

Before he could lose himself to the fear, he heard a distinct music he had heard before. The strings of a zither were plucked one by one, intricately creating a beautiful yet melancholic melody.

The colorful notes emerging from the zither grazed the ghosts, imploding them into thin air. Weisheng fell to the ground as his legs felt weak. The music was still playing. He looked around to see a beautiful woman finishing the last bits of the song. She looked back at him and smiled faintly.
