Chapter 20: Tales of Bran and his life before Coedwig

The system interface had not changed much since he had gotten it; the military, asset, aurum, and populate columns were the only ones to have changes. The number of warriors he had, the number of civilians he had, and the assets he had in his name, as well as his money, were listed.

He had already seen the changes in the asset and populace columns, and at first, he was pretty confused as to how the village had become his asset. After some careful thought, he realized it had something to do with 'earning the village's trust' at the beginning.

But that did not mean the village was his; it only meant they had a favorable impression of him; it was once another notification appeared that said, 'The villagers of Coedwig had acknowledged you as a great protector and leader. Their impression of you has deepened (+32).'

Once that appeared, he found out that the system had certain levels of trust. One of the first levels was earning a village's trust, and as one continued to help and deepen the relationship with the village, he would come to a point where the village would be considered his.

The village of Coedwig was the best example; they had acknowledged Gresvin and were under his 'protection,' and as such, the village had started to regard him as their lord.

Gresvin found this event quite amusing, but he did not refute it in the slightest. It was good for him to have people under him, and he would not refuse them if they wished him to protect them. They had their roles, and he had his.

Besides, such things were quite common in the region of Aethelgard. He had no reason to think that the Endless Plains would be different, and as such, he welcomed it and accepted his new role with open arms.

Gresvin did not need to look any further and only opened his personal info column.

{Gresvin Oakfall}

{Age 19}

{Rank 2}

{Skills}

{Beginner Bow and Arrow [Level 15] }

{Beginner Swordsmanship [Level 7]}

Compared to the overall {Empire System} interface, the personal interface, however, could have been better, but it did not need to be something as detailed as the main interface.

'Still rank 2, huh?' Gresvin sighed when he saw the information. He had hoped he would be able to advance a rank, but he still needed to train some more.

In this world, power scaling was quite strange. The ranks of the warriors could be graded, but there was only a slight difference in strength between the ranks except when advancing to the higher echelons of power.

Many times, warriors of higher rank could be defeated, but warriors of lower rank, and that is due to various different factors, skill, and equipment being one of them. 'Although the system ranking is quite weird and the power scaling is strange, it's not too difficult to understand,' Gresvin smiled warmly, 'I probably have the strength to fight 7 or eight men when I can face off against 10 warriors simultaneously then I could be considered a Rank 3 warrior, right?"

The power scaling was as follows: If one was a Rank 2 warrior, he could fight and defeat two men quite definitively. Once one reached rank 2, it meant he could fight against 5 rank 1 warriors. This was not due to superhuman strength but because their skills were a notch higher than those of rank 2 warriors, and their equipment was significantly better.

Once they were able to fight against 10 rank 1 warriors, one could be considered to be rank 3 warriors. Well it was only a rough scale estimate and not very accurate.

The power scaling was, in all fairness, extremely loose, and even though Gresvin had paid attention to it, if one's skill was able to advance, then the probability for them to advance was even higher.

'I wish the power scaling was more definitive. This loss scaling is hard to make an accurate guess… well, maybe not for me.' He smiled ruefully. Seeing the system display the rank he belonged to had inclined Gresvin to believe that what was stated was the truth.

'Proficient in bow and arrow?' Under the skill column, two tabs could be seen, and they attracted Gresvin's attention. The information regarding that was not too much; the only thing it mentioned was that proficiency is divided into a few categories, from beginner to peak.

'The higher the proficiency the better the skill, the stronger one would be.'

His eyes shone brightly as he considered the possibility. With that in mind, he concluded, 'I will need to increase my proficiency in archery if I ever have hope of advancing in the future.'

After he had made up his mind, he slowly stood up from the tree and walked off. He knew what he needed to do now, but he also knew that too much training could strain his body, and instead of increasing his strength, it could deteriorate if he did not take care of himself.

Hours passed, and the evening had arrived. The villagers were gathered in the village square and ate together. Ever since the village raid, the people of the village, considering their low number, had grown closer than ever. Since they were so few, they would gather at night and have dinner together.

The only ones who did not attend the dinner were the warriors stationed around the village.When Gresvin arrived, the villagers were already gathered. Almost all of the people greeted him, and Gresvin responded in kind. After their greetings were made, they started to make dinner; only a few villagers partook in the making of dinner while the rest gathered together and spoke of stories and rumors, anything interesting regarding the outside world beyond their village.

When they mentioned the areas beyond the village, most of them had a yearning hidden in the depths of their eyes. Their yearning could not escape the eyes of the Gresvin, who stayed quiet as he listened to the villagers' tales.

The group sat around a large fire in the middle of the village, where a fire pit was built. Gresvin had suggested it, and the villagers had happily agreed to help build the pit.
