Chapter 7: Outskirts of Route 5 [7]

Arriving at the house in the middle of the woods took just another 10 minutes. Thankfully there was a direct path to it which made the trip smoother. Looking around in interest seeing all the Pokemon, my mind wonders off questioning some things.

Outside could be seen some Oddish, Bellsprout and the occasional Pidgey.

'Have any Pokemon just tried to attack my parents?' I thought.

It made some sense because their home wasn't too deep into the forest as there was a Pokemon Center nearby, as seen by the episode. But I can't help but be a little nervous for them.

I suppose the Pokemon around here are more calm and weaker.

"Let's go, Sunny!" Sue excitedly says opening the door. "You too my cute little munchkin! Do your best to protect my son."

Mudkip receiving even more pats, just happily took them showing his adorably wide eyes.

Getting off the car I let my parents head off into the house as I wanted to make haste for the forest immediately. Not really spending a second to look at the house itself but my eyes identify some familiar berry bushes.

The direction past the berry bushes should be where the huge tree is. There was sort of a path already made heading back to the Pokemon Center. So it made sense why Ash was so close to this house in the first place.

On top of exploring, this will be my first time seeing the wild and how it would work.

While there should be a plentiful amount of Pokemon, it interests me how docile or aggressive these creatures would be. Especially since the original Sunny should have been visiting the woods.

And making some friends along the way...

"I'll be back!" I announce as Mudkip runs towards my side.

"Mudkip!"

With my notebook, a hat and a singular friend ball to my name.

It was exploring time!

My parents seeing this both got a reminiscent smile as my Pokemon and I started to jog off into the wild. With Mudkip right behind me trying to keep a steady pace as I've instructed, I was in front just slowing myself down a little.

Despite the water Pokemon being you know, a Pokemon. There are obvious limitations such as speed due to his size and how he's built. As a human, my legs are naturally long and we're built to hunt using our stamina.

So something like this would be a deficit in front of him.

But no worries he should improve right with me.

'Goal one is cardio. Mudkip might not have my speed due to his legs but he might have more stamina?' I smiled amused at the thought.

Jogging through the dirt path it was smooth sailing for a few minutes. Ignoring all the Pokemon that were staring at us, none of them really interested me that much in terms of strength.

Does a Pokemon's base stat in a game translate over to real life?

Maybe...

But that still gives me a good estimate as to which Pokemon I should probably strive for. Obviously, not all my planned team members would have "the highest" base stat totals.

*Thud*

"Kip!" Mudkip suddenly shouts as I turn around.

Seeing the poor guy's face flat on the ground, I walk over to the mudfish as my hands pick him up in a carry. Mudkip who was pouting because of the dirt on its face, just stared at my face making me chuckle.

"There should be a lake somewhere close, don't worry alright? You can swim a little as I do some extra training." I console rubbing his favourite spot.

Mudkip losing its pout, physically had its expression brighten at the thought of swimming.

"Mud mud!" He happily shouts puffing its chest up as he escapes my grasp, landing back on the ground.

With that small little rest, we were now going under a huge tree trunk which was in the original anime episode. It looked magical as if we were going through a small cave to which the end showed a huge river.

To the right of the river, it started to blend into a sandy area predictably where Onix and a few other ground/rock types would be.

My starter who saw this immediately got a wide smile.

But due to his training at the lab didn't impulsively leave my side which was honestly a godsend. If my starter was from a random batch then it would have been annoying.

"Mudkip kip!" He says looking at me with his wide eyes. With his tail wagging faster every moment I wait, I laugh at how excited he is.

"Alright let's scan the area before we can get you to swim buddy."

My words light a fire in Mudkip's eyes and he does a big nod, attentively looking out for any opposing Pokemon.

Essentially protecting me from harm.

'I don't deserve him.' I inwardly cry to myself completely smitten with mudfish. His serious expression always gave me an urge to cuddle and give pats.

Ignoring this for a bit, we started to walk around the open area trying to get a feel for it. While spacious it had a somewhat flat surface which was perfect for training and Pokemon battles. Thinking of this it was time for me to do a little shadow boxing.

While a few Pokemon were here, they left almost immediately after spotting us.

"Mudkip go for a little swim but stay close," I instruct knowing my words would not be ignored. Getting the nod from my mudfish as he sprinted off towards the lake, I watched as the poor boy tripped and fell a second time today.

*Thud*

'Oh dear.'

Putting a hand on my face and a finger on each temple, I hold back a laugh as a smirk creeps up. Jogging up to the little creatures I pick him up.

"Kip..." He murmurs looking away.

"Hey don't look away from me. Here I'll throw you up high so you can splash in the water!"

Mudkip shyly looking back tried to hide his face but his tail exposed his current thoughts. Smirking I turned Mudkip around who had some dirt on his body, now facing the lake. Getting right up to the water my hands start to heave my starter upwards.

Soon after sending him forward.

"MUDKIPPP!"

*Splash!*

Hitting the water, some of the little droplets hit me. Causing my shirt to get a little wet which felt more refreshing than anything.

Waiting a few seconds for Mudkip to get up, I see his fin pop up. Then soon after his face went above the water and he started to swim around in joy.

Letting the Pokemon do his own thing, it was now my turn to play my part. After doing a few stretches before my inevitable fate, it was time to shadowbox.

'Imagine a man in dark-clad attire.' I thought to myself.

Getting into a stance I start to get into a rhythm keeping my knees and legs constantly ready to move. Moving most of my weight on my back leg, I do a relatively slow middle kick just trying to get a feeling for it.

'Fully extend, no half-assed movement.' I reminded myself as my feet landed.

Swiftly retracting my leg back I keep my rhythm, doing a few punches I start to incorporate my knees and elbows. Constantly pushing forward and backing away as if the person in my mind is attacking.

My body started to speed up a little as I got comfortable.

It was like I was in a trance finally adjusting to my body.

[Third Person's POV (A couple metres away)]

While Sunny was starting to get into the groove of his shadow boxing, his speed constantly increased. There were a few eyes preying eyes hiding behind some trees watching from a distance.

These Pokemon were a group of Mankeys.

With one of them specifically having a glint in his eyes looking at Sunny's movements and the hat on his head.

"Mankey Mankey..." The Mankey who was the clear leader of the group being the largest, whispered to his friends as he had an idea. Bravely leaving the trees he went straight towards Sunny who didn't notice this.

Utilising some quick movements he stole the hat seamlessly.

Getting a giddy feeling the Mankey swiftly ran back. But instead of heading to his friends, he ran towards the closest tree and started to spectate the shadowboxing interest.

Slowly he started to emulate some moves with his legs and hands. To Mankeys ire the shout of a certain mudfish broke it out of his musings as he ignored it and looked back at Sunny.

[Sunny Haruto POV (Outskirts of Route 5)]

As the time passed my movements flowed better but physically got slower as I tire myself out.

Unknown to me because of this, my hat was already taken away by a certain Pokemon. Feeling the sweat going down my face my starter shouts.

"Muddd!" I hear Mudkip's cries.

Getting broken out of my trance I look at mud fish in confusion.

"What is it Mudkip? Enjoy the swim before we go back."

Mudkip who saw he had my attention, used his stubby foot to point near the forest. Next to one of the trees was a certain Mankey wearing a blue hat.

'Wait that's my hat.' I thought squinting my eyes.

While I thought it would take a few days to find him, it seems like that isn't the case. The Mankey who was peeking had stars in his eyes completely clueless about us looking at him.

Mankey who is tiny, was only up to slightly above my knees.

"Hey, Mankey come out!" I shout waving at him.

The pig monkey Pokemon realising we were waving at him, slowly left the tree and cautiously walked forward.

"Mankey?" It said tilting itself to the side.

"You watched my little shadow boxing right, do you want to learn how to fight? The martial art is called Muay Thai!"

Getting into a stance Mankey's eyes lit up bobbing his head up and down. It seems like he was watching my little show, this makes it easier.

Watching the little guy, he tries to emulate me. Mankey throws a few punches before he tries to kick forward. But this only ends up with up falling down.

"Mankey mank!"

"Key key!"

Back where the trees were, had a few more Mankeys who laughed at their leader's fall. Seeing this it confirmed I've gotten the Mankey I waited for.

Mankey who quickly got up, wiped for dirt off himself, a bit embarrassed.

"Do you want to learn from me?" I asked to which I got a determined nod.

"I'm willing to teach you…" I say trailing off at the end making him anticipate my next words. "If you become my Pokemon. You're talented but it won't matter if you don't work hard."

Getting an understanding look from the Mankey. He backed off a few metres with my hat still on his head.

If it's a battle he wants then it's what he's gonna get.

"Alright, Mudkip let's add another team member to the party!" I say hyping my starter up.

"Kip!" Mudkip shouts gaining a serious expression he usually does for battles.
