Madeline sat in the same seat as she did last time. This time, sunlight flooded through the window, casting a warm glow into the room.

Though shadows just like yesterday lingered where he had sat, covered by the curtains, she didn't dwell on it.

Typically, it was customary for her to wait for her husband before beginning her meal. However, Madeline was too upset to delay any longer. She simply wanted to have breakfast and depart before meeting him. No, she had no desire to see him; that would be for the best.

Scooping a spoonful of rich soup into her mouth, the heat stung her tongue, but she paid it no mind. Despite her distress, the food was exceptionally lavish, unlike any she had tasted before. Her gaze roamed over the abundance of dishes laid out on the table.
