My hand covers my mouth as I get closer to the body. A sob becomes stuck in my throat, and it comes out choked, loud. Then, my head turns and I see another. I recognize this one too. The first tear falls, but it doesn't stop there. More fall; there is nothing I can do to stop them. The more I look around, the more of them I see. Bodies upon bodies are scattered everywhere, most of them mutilated beyond recognition. They all show clear signs of struggle.
I start running again because I need to find my family. A part of me knows that their fate might have been the same as all those bodies I've been seeing. The hopeful part of me prays to the Moon Goddess to let me find them alive. Rowan follows me to the pack house, no words exchanged between us even still. We run past tens of bodies on the ground, but we don't stop to try and figure out who each one is. As bad as it sounds, they aren't our priority. They never will be when it comes to the people I love.
