This was seen by Elena, she was stunned to see this sight, since they'd met, talk less of paying attention to her, there were only a number of times he had smiled

None were towards her but mainly due to her father and Rio's greed for funds 

She looked where Rio was looking and realized he was paying attention to the giant eagle and turned back to look at his expression 

Once Rio realized Elena was looking at him he realized he was smiling and composed himself once again
