Chapter 1: 001 :> Shadows Of Hope

Kevin crouched behind the crumbling wall of an abandoned factory, his heart pounding in his chest.

The mission had gone sideways fast. What was supposed to be a straightforward extraction had turned into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

His team was scattered, communication lines were cut, and the enemy was closing in.

The cool night air did little to calm his nerves as he gripped his rifle tightly, scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.

He was a special ops soldier, trained for the worst, but nothing could prepare him for betrayal.

The voice in his earpiece, once trusted, had led him and his team into an ambush.

He could still hear the chilling final words of his commanding officer, "Sorry, Kevin. Orders are orders."

Kevin's sharp eyes caught a glint of metal in the darkness. He swung his rifle around and fired, taking down an enemy soldier before they could react.

He moved swiftly, his training kicking in as he navigated the labyrinth of debris and ruined structures.

He needed to find a way out, a way to survive. He thought about his life up until this point.

Growing up as an orphan, he'd learned to rely on himself. The system had taught him that attachments were a weakness, something he carried into adulthood.

The military became his family, and he excelled in it, mastering firearms and becoming one of the best. But even the best couldn't see betrayal coming from those they trusted most.

Another shot rang out, and Kevin felt a sharp pain in his side. He gritted his teeth and pushed forward, adrenaline dulling the pain as he focused on survival.

He ducked into a narrow alley, pressing his back against the cold brick wall, trying to catch his breath. His mind raced. Who had betrayed them? Why? He had so many questions, but no time for answers.

He glanced down at the wound in his side; it wasn't fatal, but it was enough to slow him down. He had to keep moving.

Kevin's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps. He raised his rifle, ready to fire, but hesitated as he recognized the figure approaching. It was Daniels, a fellow soldier, someone he'd fought beside for years.

"Daniels," Kevin whispered, relief flooding his voice. "You're alive."Daniels' face was etched with guilt and regret.

"Kevin, I'm sorry. I had no choice."Kevin's relief turned to confusion, then to cold, hard realization.

"It was you," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "You set us up."Daniels didn't deny it. "They have my family, Kevin. They said they'd kill them if I didn't cooperate."

Kevin's grip tightened on his rifle. He wanted to pull the trigger, to end the betrayal here and now, but he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Despite everything, he understood Daniels' desperation."Get out of here," Kevin said through gritted teeth. "Before I change my mind."Daniels nodded, his eyes filled with gratitude and sorrow.

"I'm sorry," he said again before disappearing into the shadows.

Kevin took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He couldn't dwell on it now. He had to keep moving. He pushed through the pain and exhaustion, navigating the maze of the factory until he found an exit.

He burst through the door and into the open, but his relief was short-lived. A sharp crack echoed through the night, and Kevin felt a searing pain in his chest.

He staggered, looking down to see a spreading stain of blood. He collapsed to the ground, his vision blurring.

The world around him grew dim as he struggled to breathe. He'd survived countless missions, faced death head-on, but now, lying on the cold ground, he knew this was the end.

As darkness closed in, Kevin's thoughts drifted to the life he never had, the family he never knew.

He'd always been alone, always fought alone. Maybe, in another life, things could have been different. His last breath left his body, and everything went black.

But it wasn't the end. Far from it.

A face appeared above him, a man's face, smiling gently. "Hello there, little one," he cooed. He had dark brown hair, light blue eyes and chiseled jaw.

Kevin's mind screamed in confusion. This wasn't possible. He was a soldier, a man. But as he tried to move, he realized the horrifying truth.

He was a baby, reborn in a body that wasn't his own.The man's face blurred as tears filled his eyes.

He'd been given a second chance, a new life. But what kind of life would it be? He didn't know.

All he knew was that he had to survive, no matter what. And so, Kevin, now an infant, began his new journey in a world that had no idea what was coming.
