Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Alchemy, the Source of Magical Products
"Except for the cockroach cluster, take three portions of the other snacks each!"
Seeing the dilemma of the Weasley twins and touched by their situation, Lynn generously retrieved a handful of golden Galleons from his moneybag, enchanted with the undetectable extension charm, intending to emulate Harry Potter's newfound wealth in the coming year.
The plump witch looked at Lynn in surprise, then prepared three portions of each snack, excluding the cockroach cluster, and handed them to Lynn. She also gave three Chocolate Frogs to the Weasley twins.
"Let's eat together! I can't finish all of this myself!" After the witch left the compartment, Lynn suggested to the Weasley twins with a smile.
Fred and George exchanged glances.
Fred grabbed a Sizzling Sizzler from the snack pile, popped it into his mouth, and exclaimed with his mouth full, "Mmm, so sweet! I bet Professor Dumbledore would love this!"
George handed one of their Chocolate Frogs to Lynn.
Lynn accepted it gratefully, tearing open the packaging and capturing the frog before it could hop away.
After consuming the Chocolate Frog, Lynn retrieved another card from the packaging.
The card depicted a man with light blue eyes and short black hair. His glasses reflected two white lights, giving him a serious yet somewhat gloomy appearance.
Lynn turned the card over to read the text:
Wallison Green, a renowned French alchemist and direct disciple of the great alchemist Nicolas Flamel.
Mr. Green's notable contributions include:
- Participating in the capture of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in 1945,
- Inventing the alchemical product "Magic Dampening Stone",
- Making significant advancements in alchemy alongside his teacher, Nicolas Flamel, among others.
Upon reading this, Lynn's interest piqued. Wallison Green was a character not mentioned in the original books, and his involvement in Grindelwald's capture contradicted Lynn's understanding of the established lore.
Of course, the wizarding world was vast and varied, and it wasn't surprising that powerful wizards existed outside of the books' narratives.
However, the invention of the "Magic Dampening Stone" intrigued Lynn. It sounded ominous, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
Meanwhile, Fred and George lamented that all their Chocolate Frog cards depicted Dumbledore.
Observing Lynn's card, George commented, "Mr. Wallison Green? That's a rare one. You're lucky, Lynn!"
Curious, Lynn asked, "Do you know Mr. Green? I'd like to learn more about the 'Forbidden Stone' among his contributions."
Amused by Lynn's eagerness, the Weasley twins chuckled.
After a moment, Fred explained, "The 'Forbidden Stone' invented by Mr. Wallison Green has the ability to suppress magical power to some extent. When it was first introduced, it garnered attention from Ministries of Magic worldwide and was used to safeguard important areas, such as the Department of Mysteries in the British Ministry of Magic."
"However," George added, "the 'Dampening Stone' isn't as powerful as one might think. A piece the size of a Quaffle can only reduce magical abilities within a ten-meter radius by less than 10%. It's ineffective against powerful wizards like Professor Dumbledore!"
Lynn nodded, understanding.
Indeed, if the "Dampening Stone" were too potent, it would likely be banned rather than sought after by Ministries of Magic.
George then elaborated, "You've seen the power of alchemical products! Everything from Quick-Quotes Quills used by reporters to Dungbombs at Zonko's Joke Shop is made through alchemy!"
Lynn recalled these items and nodded. He remembered the Weasley twins later establishing Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.
Fred sighed, "We've wanted to learn alchemy for ages, but it's only an elective for sixth and seventh years. Ancient Runes is only available from third year onwards."
George chimed in, "So we borrowed 'Ancient Runes Made Easy,' 'Rune Dictionary,' and 'Magical Hieroglyphs and Logograms' from a sixth-year Ravenclaw with a Ton-Tongue Toffee. Our plan is to study ancient runes first, then delve into alchemy!"
Fred added with a grin, "We've even thought about enhancing the Dungbombs after learning these runes, just to give Filch a little scare! By the way, Filch is the Hogwarts caretaker."
Lynn hadn't expected the Weasley twins to be interested in alchemy so early.
But it wasn't surprising. When Harry Potter started school, the twins were already making improvements to Dungbombs, and they were only in their third year at the time.
After the twins' explanation, Lynn found himself intrigued by alchemy as well.
"May I also borrow those books you borrowed?" Lynn asked. "I'd like to familiarize myself with ancient runes in advance."
The Weasley twins readily agreed.
Fred retrieved three slightly worn magic books from their luggage in the corner. These were the "Ancient Runes Made Easy," "Rune Dictionary," and "Magical Hieroglyphs and Logograms" mentioned earlier by George.
Lynn accepted the books gratefully. As a gesture of gratitude, he also loaned his mother's notebook on fire spells to the twins.
"These are my mother's notes on fire spells from her time at Hogwarts," Lynn explained.
Fred took the notebook, teasing, "With this, your fire spells must be quite potent, Lin!"
Lynn nodded, then took out his wand and cast a silent spell, conjuring a ball of flame between them.
Feeling the heat, the twins were taken aback.
Fred hadn't expected Lynn's fire spells to be so powerful. He had only been joking earlier!
A silent spell—this was advanced magic! Even adult wizards rarely mastered non-verbal casting!
Fred and George rejoiced inwardly.
