John Avery sat across from his girlfriend, Alice, in the cozy, dimly lit corner of their favorite coffee shop. John chuckled, a sound more weary than amused. Lately, he had found himself drawn to the late-night world of "Coast to Coast," a radio show that delved into the supernatural and the mysteries of the universe. It was an escape, a window into a world where the impossible seemed within reach. "Nothing interesting ever happens to me," he admitted, stirring his coffee absentmindedly. "I think I've seen it all. The world kind of bores me."
"And what would make it more interesting?" Alice prodded, her curiosity piqued.
He paused, considering the question. The answer came to him almost as a joke, a whimsical thought. "I don't know, I'd like to see a UFO maybe?" The words felt silly as they left his mouth, and he quickly moved on, convinced that such fantasies were far removed from the realm of possibility.
Before they left, Alice's words lingered in the air, a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life. "You say nothing interesting happens to you anymore, but remember, every year in November, oddly, you always experience some type of life-changing event. Like a move, or a job offer, or you win the daily 3. You're still young, and it's around that time. Who knows?"
Their conversation faded into the background as they got into the car and began the drive home. The night wrapped around them, a blanket of stars unseen beneath the city's glow. John's thoughts wandered, caught in the web of Alice's words and the elusive thrill of the unknown.
Then, without warning, the ordinary night transformed. Beside their car, a distance away at first, a saucer-shaped object emerged, gliding through the air with an eerie grace. It dipped to the level of their vehicle, pacing alongside as if tethered by an invisible thread. When they hit a red light, it stopped; when they accelerated, it moved in sync.
John and Alice exchanged a look of utter disbelief. Words failed them, their voices lost in the magnitude of the moment. "Well, there's your UFO," Alice finally whispered, her voice a mix of awe and incredulity.
The encounter was brief, the object vanishing as quickly as it had appeared, leaving them with a shared wonder that would forever alter the fabric of their reality. John, who had longed for a sign that the world was more than it seemed, found his wish granted in the most unexpected way. The experience marked the beginning of a journey neither of them could have anticipated, a journey into the heart of the mysteries they had only dared to dream of.
