"Why wouldn't he?" I retorted, the words spilling out with a force I didn't know I had. "Why wouldn't he? After you practically sold me to them."

"Imogen, this was our—"

"No!" I cut in. "No. This isn't what you wanted, isn't it? You pushed me into this life, into this marriage, all for your stupid dream of being part of some perfect family. You never cared what I wanted. You only cared about the image, about the status. And now look where it's gotten me."

Her eyes filled with tears, but I didn't care. I couldn't stop now. The anger, the pain, it all came pouring out of me like a dam that had finally burst. "You put me in this situation, Mom. You pushed me into marrying him because you thought it would elevate us, make us part of the Rossi family. You made me think this was what I was supposed to want, that this was the life I deserved. And now… now I'm paying the price for it."
