He miraculously didn't die, but he was indeed teetering on the brink of death when Mother Rui rushed him to the clinic in the middle of the night, shocking the middle-aged doctor who had been prepared to rest. 

No, 'shock' was too mild a word to describe Doctor Ma's emotions when he saw them. For a moment, he even thought he had encountered a vengeful ghost. 

In the ward, the soothing fragrance of incense spread out, mingling with the distinct smell of medicine and thick stench of blood. On the bed lay a small, motionless body whose eyes were covered in white bandages stained with crimson specks. His lips were bloodless, and his complexion was paler than a corpse. Were it not for the subtle rise and fall of his chest, one might have doubted whether he was truly alive.
