The ordeal left both of them physically and emotionally shattered. As they rested in a cave, Alysia confronted him.
"Why did you save me?" she asked.
"You wouldn't have survived on your own," he said simply.
"That's not an answer."
He looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Maybe I'm tired of losing people."
The admission hung between them, heavy and unspoken.
