Chapter 30: A Gloomy Day

Betty's last two statements struck Lola's heart like the sting of a bullet ant. She slowly leaned back in her seat, her heart heavy with the burden of her misfortune and the guilt of fighting another helpless woman.

"An honest mistake?! You call certifying a married woman, HIV positive and reconfirming that same result when she reached out to you, an honest mistake? You are so cruel, woman."

Jamal barked at Betty, disgusted by her pretentious pleas. He could tell when someone was really sorry or when someone was faking it.

In this case, Jamal knew Betty was faking ignorance and innocence. He could see beyond the facade of her crocodile tears. He had a gut feeling that she was an unscrupulous staff, who had committed a grievous offence against an innocent woman.
