Chapter 2: Flappy Bird!?
One by one, the student starts to summon their first creature, turning it into a rune in their chest. Most of them summon a beast-like creature from a tiger, bear, or boar. Some minorities summon avian and insectoid types.
So far, only three students have gotten a B-Grade creature: Alex has a black saber-toothed tiger, and Reina is the student who spoke with Elly earlier. She has long purple hair and seductive looks, and she summons purplish Black Spider.
The last one is a giant eagle with golden feathers, as tall as an adult man. Its summoner, Raiden, is the silent type in the class, speaking only when necessary.
Benjamin looks at Olivia, feeling satisfied with the result so far. "Do you think we will get an SSS summon?" he asks.
Olivia shakes her head. "I doubt it, Headmaster. The last time that happened was a decade ago, and we only discovered it after he became a three-star Evoker."
Benjamin sighs. "If only we had more funds, we could acquire the latest device to assess their potential."
Olivia suggests, "We should focus on the compatibility test machine instead of potential. It's more crucial to determine a student's spirit type and element."
Despite being one of the best schools in the city, Oakfield High School lacks a lot of equipment, and each of these machines costs them a fortune. This is why the school accept the special student as long they can give enough donation. Of course, they still need the minimum amount of talent to be accepted.
As they talk, it becomes Henry's turn. A fiery red portal materializes, and a scorpion with crimson scales emerges from it. The sound of clicking could be heard as its pincers started clattering.
A flicker of flame burns at the tip of its stinger. The circle lights up again, enveloping the scorpion, which then transforms into a pattern of a scorpion surrounded by flames. This rune shifts to Henry's chest.
He experiences a burning sensation as the rune moves erratically before finally becoming engraved on his spine.
The grading machine begins its assessment - F…E…B… - and soon stabilizes at A. Henry, with a triumphant smile, walks to the other side.
As the heir of the Campbell family, this result is the minimum he should expect; yet, beneath his smile, he feels a deep sense of relief. He knows that if he had received only a C-grade, he would get beaten up at home.
Clap...clap... Some students begin to applaud him, aware that building a good relationship with him will benefit their path as Evokers.
Alex comments, "Congratulations, young Master Henry."
Other students join in, gathering around Henry to shower him with praise and congratulations.
"Well done, Young Master! You are a true genius," one student exclaims, smiling broadly as he tries to flatter Henry.
"Bravo, Young Master! As expected of the Campbell family," another adds.
Henry smiled politely as he received the praise. Meanwhile, Sophia continues to call other students until it's finally Elly's turn.
Elly steps forward to take the card. A snow-white portal appears, and from it emerges a small human figure with four wings on its back, small enough to fit in Elly's hand.
The pixie, with long silver hair fluttering, flies around Elly, examining her with its two crystal eyes. It then moves close to Elly's face, and as the circle glows, the pixie transforms into a pattern of wings, which then becomes engraved on her back.
The machine whirs again, stabilizing at an S rank. The other students look at Elly with surprise and envy as she walks towards them. They begin to crowd around her, but she gives them the cold shoulder.
Reina challenges her, "Are you really going to throw away our friendship over that trash?"
Elly retorts, "I dare you to say that again. You're just jealous of him."
Reina replies, "You just can't admit the fact."
Elly counters, "The fact that you're all jealous of how much his parents love and help him? That you're all just petty?"
She then addresses the rest of the students, "I have no interest in being friends with any of you."
Reina snaps back, "He doesn't deserve to be our friend anyway."
The other students chime in, voicing their dissatisfaction with Owen.
Benjamin observes them with interest. "Her personality is interesting, and she gets an S-grade elemental type as her first rune. She has a bright future."
Sophia asks, "Don't you need to stop them?"
Olivia responds, "This is why I disagree with giving quotas to students who make large donations."
Benjamin laughs, "This is part of their education. The world of Evokers is cruel and full of unfairness. If they can't face this, they don't deserve to be Evokers."
Sophia retorts, "Just admit it's about the money. And we still have one more student to go, you know."
Benjamin coughs and says, "Alright, Olivia, stop them."
Olivia exerts her power, creating a suffocating pressure that halts the students' debate. She then addresses them, "I don't care what you think, but you're in class now. Stop acting like brats."
Throughout this, Owen remains focused on the card in Sophia's hands, unfazed by the curses from other students.
He feels grateful for Elly's defense and guilty about her losing friends, but he also believes it's better not to befriend shallow people. When Elly summons her first S-Grade creature, Owen is excited for her and eager to see his own summon. Before Sophia calls him, he has already stepped forward, feeling impatient to start.
Sophia smiles as she hands the last card to Owen. "Good luck, Owen."
She knows Owen's father, and she is one of the reasons for his placement in the special class, but she never shows it at school to avoid further ostracizing Owen.
Owen's heart beats loudly as he approaches the terminal. He inserts the card, praying inwardly, 'Gatcha God, or whoever is up there, please give me a good result; my whole life depends on this.'
At this moment, Owen somehow feels this will become a turning point in his life.
The card transforms into specks of light, giving life to the terminal. The circle lights up, and space itself starts to tear open, revealing a large, rainbow-colored portal.
A dreadful aura spread out from it, suffocating everyone in the room. Owen, closest to the portal, feels immense pressure bore down on him, but his heart races with excitement. 'The Energy is already this strong even before it comes out.'
In contrast to the surprised faces of the students, Benjamin, Olivia, and Sophia all stand ready for combat.
They watch the portal, preparing to intervene and save Owen at any second. It's a rare occurrence, but there are instances where a portal summons a hostile creature that attacks everyone. The last time this happened, there were many casualties.
KA-BOOM!!!
Suddenly, there's a loud explosion from inside the portal, and a small blue bird flies out.
It has a chubby body with tiny wings, but its tail is unique, resembling a phoenix's tail. It has two tails, one red and blue, the other purplish-yellow, and is only slightly larger than Elly's pixie. The portal closes, and the suffocating aura disappears.
Owen looks at it with disbelief. 'Is this it? Just a blue flappy bird?'
The bird flies clumsily before reaching Owen, seeming to run out of strength and then falling. He quickly opens his hand, catching it.
The other students, except Elly and surprisingly Henry, start laughing at him.
"Look what he got? A big flappy bird?"
"Is that an Angry Bird?"
"Maybe it's an X-Bird?"
"What do you mean, X-Bird?"
"It should be a Twitter bird."
But Owen doesn't hear them. As the bird falls into his hand, he scrutinizes its appearance. Others can't see it, but he realizes the bird is wounded; the blue on its body is not its real fur but blood.
He tries to wipe it away, smearing the blue blood on his finger and revealing pristine white fur underneath. The bird then transforms into a symbol, two circles connected like a horizontal figure eight, and flies onto his forehead, moving through his skull and engraving itself on his brain.
"ARRGGGH!!!" A scream of pain erupts from Owen as searing pain tears through his body. He falls to his knees, and he can feel his brain splitting open.
Elly's eyes widened, and her heart quickly filled with worry. She runs to Owen's side.
