Chapter 23: Demon King Kyuse Descends! (9)

The secret dark magic Karuti taught me was called the Magic Extraction Method.

According to Karuti, all monsters of the middle realm are the fiery descendants of the ancient magical beasts from the demon realm. Hence, they possessed a trace of magical power within them.

I should attempt to extract that power from this fresh Kobold corpse now. If not now, when would I get another chance to test it? This method wasn't even in my basic dark magic book. I should use it before I forget.

"Kereuk?"

Buril, with a blood-stained mouth, tilted his head, looking at me.

"Why, curious?"

"Kereuk."

"Then watch… Hmm-hmm."

I started chanting the spell, feeling the magical energy within my heart. After healing Buril just now, I had about half of my energy left. I focused, channeling it with precision.

I concentrated it onto my right hand.

Then,

Ziiing

"Whoa…!"

A violet magical circle appeared on the back of my hand! This could be considered a success! The first time this appeared… Yes, Karuti drew it on my hand with her finger.

"Karuti, are you watching!"

Good! As I stared at the floating magical circle, the formula quickly unraveled in my mind. With precision, I read it and directed Buril.

"Buril, quickly. Lay that Kobold straight in front of me."

"Kereung."

Immediately, Buril dragged the Kobold corpse and laid it upright in front of me. The very moment I placed my hand on the Kobold's chest,

Whooosh

My vision…

It was dyed in violet. Was light being emitted? No, it was flowing from my eyes. An aura was emanating.

"Enter!"

With the intention of gripping the Kobold's heart, I pushed my hand in, Shwoo! - It felt as though I was thrusting my hand into the mud! My hand penetrated straight through the Kobold's chest!

"Kereuk…!"

Shivering…!

Buril, astounded by this scene, shivered and contracted his body while looking at me. There was no need to worry. It was a success.

"Got it!"

The moment I released the magic,

Saarruk.

The Kobold's corpse started to melt into a dark fluid, much like thick, tar-like oil. This fluid seeped into the ground within moments, and the Kobold's corpse completely disappeared, leaving only a dark stain on the grass.

And what remained in my hand was,

"A Magic Stone."

A dark, hard crystal the size of a clipped fingernail. It looked like a piece of obsidian, but its texture was closer to plastic.

"This is a Magic Stone!"

Inside, it contained the same magic flowing within me. I tried to feel it… of course, it didn't feel like anything!

Why? Because it was extracted from the Kobold. Monsters did possess magic but in a minute quantity. And obviously, a weak creature like a Kobold would have even less of it.

It was basically the dregs.

Yet, even during the extraction process, a significant part was lost.

"But still. It's better than having nothing."

Even if I gathered these tiny magic stone fragments, fortune would come eventually. Karuti mentioned that my magical power would increase if I continually consumed them.

"Thanks for the great technique."

"Kereuk?"

"Buril, there's someone I owe a lot to, named Karuti. When I achieve great things and return to the demon world, I'll introduce you."

"Kereuk? Kereung Kereuk!"

He seemed pleased.

Naturally, if I returned to the demon world, Buril would be with me. He was a part of my soul. I would never abandon him. At this point, Buril felt like a younger sibling to me.

"The demon world is damn great, you know. We'll live there together in the future."

"Kereureuk."

Even if I were to return, I was uncertain how that crazy Duchess might use me. But still, I hoped she would consider my situation a bit.

"Let's go back then. Buril, you can carry the Kobold corpse you were eating."

"Kereuk!"

With that, Buril and I returned to my dungeon.

After coming back to our base, I was completely drained. So, I simply ate some leftover lizard meat and the fruits I had collected. Then, I went inside the dungeon with Buril, meditated for a short time, and lay down to sleep.

While doing so, I tried an experiment.

That was to bring the Kobold corpse into the dungeon. Sleeping in a confined space with a corpse felt a bit off, but it was a necessary test, so I proceeded.

And upon waking up,

"As expected."

"Kereuk."

There were absolutely no insects on the Kobold corpse. It was the same yesterday. Usually, flies quickly swarm a corpse to lay their eggs. It was not that this wilderness lacked small insects.

But now, there wasn't a single insect on it.

"Is it because I'm a real demon? Do I emanate an evil aura that even bugs avoid?"

"Kereuk?"

"When you look at me, what do you think?"

"Kereuk Kereuk!"

Bang Bang!

Buril jumped with joy.

"Well, you can't possibly talk, can you?"

If this were Earth, we would have surely gone disco dancing together. I briefly imagined having fun with Buril at an amusement park, riding rides. Wearing funny hats. Eating cotton candy. It would be so damn happy.

"Then, let's eat this and start our tasks for the day."

A day had passed, but maybe because the night was chilly, it hadn't gone bad. Well, no bugs had infested it anyway.

Squeak.

Squeak.

I skilfully cut out some meat and made skewers. While I was preparing the skewers, Buril gathered some firewood.

Poo-hoo-oo-oo!

I breathed out a demon breath again, lighting up the fire, and then grilled the meat. The aroma of the cooked meat was quite pleasant.

"I'll eat two, and you have one."

"Kereuk Kereuk."

But it was damn tough, so the taste was a bit off. Still, since hunger was the best sauce, it went down well.

"The skin is too good to waste."

Having caught a monster with such fur, I couldn't help but feel it was a waste. How could we not use their fur? Primitive humans always wore clothes made from animal skins.

"Skinning."

I needed to skin it.

From what I know, one should wash the skin well, right? Remove all the flesh and fat attached to the skin, and then dry and tan it, but I was not exactly sure. Modern Earthlings wouldn't typically acquire knowledge about skinning.

Anyway, if I could do that, I'd worry less about clothing. I could even make underwear for Buril, who was currently naked.

"Finished eating?"

"Kereuk."

"Let's go find some stones then."

I needed to make a spear.

"Done! I've completed one!"

After grinding the stone piece I had been working on since yesterday like crazy, I finally finished the stone spear tip!

"Wow! I've made this damn well! Turns out I have the qualities of a master blacksmith!"

"Kereuk Kereuk!"

"Applaud! Clap!"

Clap clap clap clap!

Buril joyfully clapped!

"You think clapping is enough? Jump too! Jump!"

"Kerurureung!"

Boing boing!

The sight of him jumping around was undeniably cute. Maybe he could dance or even perform acrobatics with a bit of training? I really hoped so.

"Now, Buril. Go fetch the rope you made."

"Kerok."

Buril immediately brought the rope he had prepared. It was a bundle of strings made by tearing the stem of a sturdy plant left and right. The durability wasn't great, but all these tools were consumables anyway. We could just make and use them as needed.

"Starting the combination!"

I slightly split the end of a long, sturdy branch with an axe and fit the spear tip I made into the gap. Then, I wrapped it tightly with the rope… it was complete!

"It's a wooden spear!"

"Kereuk!"

The spear had been made!

"If we were to rank it, it'd be a 'common' grade."

The absolute basic of basics. A typical junk item. Although it's such a simple item, making it by hand was real manual labor.

Swoosh.

I immediately gripped the spear.

"Oh, oh…! This is good! This looks damn good!"

"Keureung…!"

What a decent spear! It felt good to hold it! Of course, it might break after a few uses, but it's a wooden spear, so that's to be expected!

"With this, I can hunt and fight more steadily!"

"Keurek!"

"Then let's make a lot more just like this one!"

"Keurek…?"

"What? C'mon, do you think one will be enough? We need to make a bunch and stockpile them."

"…"

Buril looked displeased. He probably didn't enjoy the tedious work of carving. To be honest, I felt the same way.

"Well… since we made one today, making another immediately might be overkill. Let's do something different today."

"Keurek?"

"Grab this, Buril."

"Keurek-Keurek."

Buril promptly grabbed the wooden spear. He was only as tall as my waist, so the spear seemed a bit big for him. I also took a long branch.

Shwack.

Then, I assumed the stance of a spearman.

"Buril, follow my stance."

"Keurek?"

With a question mark over his head, Buril awkwardly tried to mimic my stance.

"Good."

From now on.

Using this spear, I would train Buril. Fighting the kobolds made it clear. Buril was wild. He charged forth, using his claws and teeth, and fought recklessly.

Against opponents of similar size, that was effective. Buril was agile, after all.

However, if the opponent was slightly bigger than Buril, it would be over for him. I grabbed the arm of a kobold and swung it like a hammer, slamming it to the ground.

The same could happen to Buril.

That was why he needed to use a weapon like this spear to increase his reach. He might be a goblin, but if I trained him, he could use it. After all, spears were weapons even beginners could handle.

"Training time! Who's slacking off?!"

"Keu, Keurek?!"

"Focus! Begin!"

"Keurek!"

Buril, visibly tense, tightened his grip on the spear.

"Now! Mimic, my moves! Begin!"

"Keurek!"

"Haap!"

Shwack!

I took a step forward and thrust the stick!

Seeing my move, Buril awkwardly stepped forward and thrust his stone spear!

"Keureung!"

An awkward yell.

"Training time! What kind of move was that? Again!"

"Keurek!"

And so, I began training Buril in spear techniques.

If Buril mastered the spear, I could even make him an instructor when I got more goblin underlings later on. My goal… was to form a goblin army.

"Training time, Buril! Well done! Very well done!"

"Kerelek!"

When he did well, I patted his head and praised him. Buril always loved that.
