Chapter 23: It Is A Dreadful And Frightening Sight
Barry fell back to the ground after he managed to kill the Giant Sewer Rat by almost destroying its body.
Now, what was in front of him were parts of the Rat's body that had become meat paste, a gory sight next to a previously beautiful mansion courtyard.
'I didn't get any skills this time.'
He sighed in disappointment but Barry decided not to complain too much because he was still able to survive which was a good thing.
Now that Barry remembers what he did, he feels that his Gravity Manipulation skill is an extraordinary skill.
The thing is, Barry still doesn't realize how great the potential of a rare grade skill actually is.
But even so, he also has to use a lot of Magic Power to use it.
Barry concentrated and called up his stat window to see his Magic Power Attribute.
[Magic Power: 7]
Just like he thought, his Magic Power which previously amounted to 30 shrank so much in a matter of minutes, maybe even less than a minute.
But seeing the effect, Barry wasn't surprised. After all, he just floated while controlling 5 iron poles with a length of 5 meters.
'Oh, right! I have to look for Elaine!'
Barry ran in the direction he last saw the flash of light and thunder. He is sure that it was Elaine's doing but he doesn't know whether she managed to win or not.
When he finally reached the pool Barry let out a sigh of relief. He saw Elaine sitting on a chair looking at the pool.
There, a black corpse that had been torn apart floated, filling the pool with the smell of burnt flesh and blood.
"You're alright?" Barry asked as he moved closer to her.
Elaine turned her head, then nodded weakly in return. Her face looked pale, she also seemed to have used a lot of her Magic Power.
Well, with an attack like that, Barry thought it was only natural for her to use a lot of it.
"Ergh..." Elaine tried to get up but it was clear that her body was still unable to do that.
Barry immediately rushed to help her by supporting her body from the side. Elaine reflexively put her hand on Barry's shoulder, looking eager to ask for his help.
"Help me get inside the house," Elaine said.
"Yes."
They walked into the house slowly. Fortunately, Barry has a passive skill to recover his Magic Power and Life when not engaged in a fight.
They looked around. Even though it seems like they have overcome the biggest threat in this mansion, nobody can guarantee that there are no longer any threats here.
Blood and several corpses could be seen scattered inside. Elaine again felt the urge to vomit and cry. Because what she saw were the people who used to work for her.
"Do you want to rest first?" Barry asked when he saw her condition.
"N-No. I want to quickly find my mother."
Barry could see the look of determination on her face and fear in her eyes. So he did what she wanted and helped her navigate her destroyed home.
They walked along the first floor of the mansion for several minutes but found nothing other than corpses.
Then they went up to the second floor, the last floor of this mansion. Elaine swallowed hard.
"MOM!" She called her mother. Yet, no answer came.
She called again several times. But only her own voice bounced off the bloody walls.
"Shit!" Elaine started sobbing. She wiped her tears hard. "At least I have to find her body."
Barry gritted his teeth. He seemed to be able to imagine what Elaine was feeling because he still couldn't see his mother and sister as well.
What if it turns out that later, he would find them in a horrible state?
"Let's keep searching," Barry said.
"Yeah.."
And so, they keep searching. Until they finally arrived at her mother's room.
Elaine seemed reluctant to take a step towards the open door of the room. Afraid that she would see a scene where her mother died in the same condition as all of her butlers.
But, in the end, Elaine strengthened her resolve and moved forward. Barry just helped her without saying anything.
And then, finally they enter the room and...
Nothing. There's nobody inside. The room is as messy as any other room in this mansion but there are no corpses here.
There was only an open laptop with the screen off.
"Help me get there," Elaine said, pointing at the laptop.
Barry obeyed her. As soon as she arrived in front of the laptop, Elaine pressed the button.
The laptop was already in sleeping mode because it had been left untouched for a long time. The screen immediately turned on when Elaine pressed its button.
Elaine and Barry see a writing, a message actually, which appears to have been left by Elaine's mother.
"Elaine, my daughter. If you see this message, we are going to Bunker Alpha. I know you are still alive. Your father and I are waiting for you there."
Elaine immediately collapsed as if she had lost her weight. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"So, they're still alive..." Elaine said with a weak voice and smile.
Elaine broke down in tears. Barry just stared at him for a few moments, anxious about the fate of his family.
Elaine's mother probably survived because they were rich and had a shelter like the bunker alpha. But his mother and sister can't possibly afford that kind of place.
"Does your father keep some kind of weapon here?" Barry asked.
Elaine looked up at him. "Yes. There is a small weapons storage area in our basement."
"Okay. You should just wait here. Where is your basement?"
Elaine shows how Barry got to her basement. Without wasting any time, he immediately went there, leaving Elaine who was still weak.
