Chapter 2: Trapped
"So first off you never want to eat a mushroom if you're not 100% sure of what it is." I said and Amy nodded
"Now you see this white mushroom right here." I crouched down and pointed to a white mushroom and Amy nodded while staring at it.
"Avoid mushrooms with white gills, a skirt or ring on the stem and a bulbous or sack-like base called a volva.
You may be missing out on some good edible fungi but it means you will be avoiding the deadly members of the Amanita family."
Me and Amy would continue to go through the forests looking for mushrooms and I would teach her the names of a few mushrooms and which ones could and couldn't be eaten.
He learned that Amy was super smart and easy to teach so he told her he didn't mind teaching her some other things that could help with survival and she happily agreed.
"Here, drink some more water. You don't want to get dehydrated in this heat." I passed some water to Amy and she took a few sips while glancing at me.
"What? I got something on my face?" I joked.
"No it's just you come off as serious and kind of rude but you're actually really nice." Amy smiled
'Well the original Shane was kind of a jackass so that makes sense.'
"Haha! Thanks. You come off as a little princess afraid to get dirty but you're actually not what I expected."
"Hey!" Amy giggled and slapped my arm and we finally made it back to camp when we heard the CB radio go off and Amy picked up the walkie.
"Yes we can hear you!" Amy replied but the person on the other side of the radio didn't respond and eventually the radio stopped transmitting.
He could see that Amy was sad about not being able to warn the person to stay away from the city and he could see Lori looking upset as well so he spoke up.
"We can't be heroes. I know it sucks but we have to change into people we don't want to be. We can't save everyone and that's something you're gonna have to learn to accept."
"But!" Amy wanted to come up with an argument but I walked off.
No matter what eventually everyone would change or they wouldn't make it.
Later that day he was sitting around a small fire with Lori who was still a little upset while Carl was nearby playing with his toys.
I was sharpening my knife when I saw Amy approach looking slightly nervous.
"Sorry about earlier Shane, my sister says I'm stubborn."
"Not a problem at all. Sit down, I'll teach you and Carl how to tie some knots." I smiled
"Yaaa!" Carl came running over with a silly smile while Amy sat in the chair next to me and started teaching them a few basic knots.
Lori was folding some clothes nearby with a smile on her face.
"That's called the bowline knot."
"Yeah, kind of like that pull pull it tighter." I helped Amy tie her knot and I tried to ignore how smooth her hands felt.
I would also catch Amy glancing at me from time to time and we would both smile before going back to tying knots.
It seemed me and Amy's relationship was a lot better and I started to like Amy and her unique personality.
Of course it was nothing but a friendship right now and he didn't know if it would go any further or not.
"Shane, you messed me up!" Amy slapped my arm.
"No you just can't tie a knot correctly." I chuckled and Carl was too busy trying to tie his own knot to even care about us.
"Hello base camp? Can anyone out there hear me?" The CB radio started up and he could recognize T-Dog's voice.
Standing up I listened as Dale tried to talk to T-dog but it wasn't very clear.
"Were trapped in the department store. We're surrounded."
Hearing that I frowned. Not only was that our own people but they also had all the food and supplies we might need.
"I heard the department store." Lori said
"Same here." Dale said
"Shane." Lori wanted to say something but I cut her off.
"If they are not back by tonight I'll go after them in the morning. Alone." I said and Lori looked a little relieved and nodded while Amy looked scared.
"Don't worry Amy. Your sister is a survivor."
"Let's all go relax for a bit and try to keep our minds off of it for now."
