Private Alliance

"Lord Tarly, just take a look at the two of us. Oberyn just turned into an adult and I am only 10 years old. No matter how smart and wise Tywin Lannister is, I honestly don't care. When I am in my prime and the top of my game the lion will already be old. It's the same with all the other wise leaders of Westeros. The only people that I care about are 25 years or younger right now, because they will be in their prime once I reach adulthood. I gather information from all around Westeros and Essos and even have some people in the family analyse them for me and give me a weekly summary. And right now from all the people I consider to have potential to be a threat in the future, the only person that I will very likely face in a future battle is now sitting right in front of me. You can imagine from the way I and House Di Natale operate that we are analysing all this onformation in order to remove future threats years before they can become a trouble for us. And the presence of Oberyn Martell right now proves that I already expressed my idea regarding you, Randyll Tarly, towards House Martell. As a student of the alchemists of Lys and one of the richest people in the Known World, I could find a thousand ways for you to die in the next ten years without anyone ever doubting me, I can guerantee that."

By this time the hands of Randyll Tarly were getting really sweety. Without his knowledge a ten year old hear of a large family has been gathering all his information without him noticing and even used his family's think tank to analyse everything about him. The result turned him into one of potentially biggest threats to him in the future and he somehow got into they crosshair of this large interest group. If he left todays conversation earlier without giving the person in front of him any face he would have suffered many catastrophic events in the years to come, this he was absolutely sure of.

"I am sure you are not feeling all too well with the informations you just received, Lord Tarly. But on the positive side, me telling you all those informations and having you sit here at the same table with us, sharing a nice meal together, should lessen your worries by a lot. To every coin there are two sides in my opinion. One the one side you could become a threat to House Di Natale and House Martell, but on the other hand you are a talent and cooperation with you could be very worth it. I don't think that we will have any big conflicts of interest in the future and deepening our relationship will prove very valuable for all of us. Or does House Tarly want to be loyal to House Tyrell to death? Because I can asure you if you listen to Lady Olenna for too long that is what will be awaiting you."

Victor calmly but surely explained his thought process to the next heir of House Tarly. This calmness put a lot of pressure on the always prideful Randyll Tarly. He didn't know how to react and whether to agree or firmly disagree. He needed to make his standpoint clear.

"House Tarly will of course not sacrifice everything for House Tyrell, but we are a proud family of military commanders that will never betray their allies in battle. If you hope to gain the alliance and friendship of House Tarly and for us to betray the Reach if a large battle were to break out in the future, than I have to disappoint you, Victor Di Natale. I, Randyll Tarly, would never do just a cowardly act."

Both Victor and Oberyn were quite impressed to finally meet a man of loyalty and integrity. In this world of Ice and Fire such an occasion was much rarer than you would guess. But that made Victor even more firm in his wish to have a good relationship with House Tarly early on. The residence of House Tarly, Horn Hill, was a location Victor wanted to gain influence on.  Located on an eponymous hill, the castle lies south of Highgarden and a hundred leagues northeast of Oldtown among the thickly-wooded foothills of the Red Mountains. Horn Hill has a sept within its walls. A pond lies below the castle. The woods around Horn Hill are teeming with game. The Tarlys employ huntsmen and hounds during their hunts. This let to the fact that the Tarlys were marcher lords of the Dornish Marches.

The Marcher lords have proudly defended the realms of the Storm Kings and Kings of the Reach against incursions from Dorne. Many ballads and tales praise the valor and skill at arms of the Marcher lords and their longbowmen.

All the above made it very necessary for Victor to at least gain the good will of House Tarly in order to gain influence in the Reach and have a noble family that can keep House Tyrell wary. If with a hidden alliance Victor could increase the strenght and fame of House Tarly by a certain degree he would have a lot of possibilities to use this in the future.

Victor's immediate interest was of course in the Usurpers' rebellion that would start in a little over a year. After the tourney of Harrenhal and the start of the rebellion Randyll Tarly would become a real warlord and gain prestige and honor on the battlefield. If he couldn't invest in him now, he would never have the opportunity again. He tried to convince Randyll to agree.

"I don't need any betrayal of House Tarly against the Reach. I just need a family in the Reach that I can have peaceful conversations and negotiations with. I certainly lack those conditions with House Tyrell and I honestly don't want any relationship with the Tyrell's, because I disdain them. But it would be a pity if all the noble families of the Reach would become my enemies just because House Tyrell is led by people I could never count as allies, right?"
