Chapter 08: The Day After

[Third Person POV]
"What do you mean Naruto failed his graduation? That's a bad joke, Iruka." Hiruzen Sarutobi reprimanded. His advisors, Danzo included were also less than amused.
"I'm sorry, Lord Third. But it's not." Iruka replied with a stony expression, prompting the Third to take this more seriously.
"Explain," Hiruzen demanded.
"Y-yes, Sir. *Ahem* After I walked into the classroom, I saw Naruto look at me with a worried expression. At first, I thought it was just test jitters. He might have risen to the top of the class in some areas, but his clones have always been a sore spot. His success rate has only just gotten to just over 90% last I was involved." Iruka explained, going on a tangent that the Third and the elders knew would resolve itself soon enough.
"I am aware of this much; continue," Hiruzen responded.
"After he was called to the testing room, he looked his normal self until he crossed the threshold for the room and he seemed to lose focus for a moment."
"Genjutsu..." The Third concluded with anger visible in his expression.
"Naruto did suggest we added genjutsu into our curriculum, but it was decided to leave it for the next class since his was too far along... The boy is now a victim of our negligence... once more..." The Third thought to himself.
"I am unsure. But even then, he was still able to make four clones, each with varying degrees of success, proving that he did try his hardest to perform the technique properly." Iruka finished.
"Hmm... Where was Naruto last seen?" The Third inquired.
"I believe he was with Mizuki getting a pep-talk..." Iruka commented.
"Keep an eye on Mizuki, then. It wouldn't be the first time he's involved in questionable circumstances." Hiruzen commanded.
"Yes, Sir." Iruka bowed and made to leave but was stopped.
"Before you leave, Iruka. There is something you're not telling me." The Third caught something in Iruka's eye and decided to question him about it.
Iruka took a deep breath and faced his commander. "His expression when he saw his clones... he was... disappointed..."
"... I see... that is all Iruka... you may go."

After Iruka left the room Hiruzen summoned his ANBU and had them tail Mizuki and Naruto and not interfere, just observe and report back. They nodded and disappeared.

[Present]
Hiruzen put away his crystal ball and sighed.
"Mizuki... Ibiki is going to have to pull out his secret weapon for this one... I almost pity the fool." He blew a puff off his pipe and began to consider the teams.
He would need to get Naruto into his office and talk about his status. He did find it amusing that Naruto had used Mizuki's reveal to mock him, but it begs the question of whether or not the boy already knew or actually thought Mizuki was lying.
Regardless, he needed to tell Naruto about his burden now that he was a genin candidate and would be exposed to dangerous situations he was not previously in while in the village.
He rubbed his face in exasperation and sighed. "I'm too old for this shit."

[MC POV]
I slurped up the last bowl of ramen and gave my thanks to sensei. He looked distraught by the amount of bowls, but he still smiled at me before leaving, probably to talk to the old fart.
I spent some time talking to Ayame and getting hugs and head pats; she was nice that way. She mentioned that my friends had all been asking about me last night and throughout the day. I just told her that things happened and I couldn't come by. She gave me a look that demanded more information but I just grinned hoping she would take the hint and she huffed in response.
"Fine, mister. But you should visit them soon, they're going to be worried about you all week; especially Hinata and Ino. Those two came by every other hour yesterday." She revealed and I started to sweat.
A worried Hinata was a hungry Hinata, and I had no funds coming in via the old man for the month.
"*Whimper* My wallet... my Gama-chan..." I hugged my frog wallet with anime tears in my eyes.
"Don't worry, Naruto. Soon you'll be making money from missions and can buy me lots of sweets, too", Ayame chirped with an evil smile.
I lowered my head in defeat. Maybe I don't want a to be with all of the girls I like... too damn expensive.

I walked over to my apartment and took a shower before going to bed. I was exhausted and had been awake all night and into the morning. I was about to fall asleep when I heard a knock at my door and had to get up to see who it was.
"Yes?", I opened the door and saw Agent Cat, i.e. Yūgao Uzuki.
"Kitty Cat!", I tried to hug her but failed and fell to the floor.
"Oi! That's not nice", I complained.
"Lord Third has called for you. Come... Naruto...", she grabbed my shoulder and used the Body Flicker without giving me the chance to fix myself.

We appeared inside of the old man's office and I landed square on my butt.
"Oi! You used to be a lot nicer, sis. Did the old man give you trouble?!", I shouted in indignation.
*Sigh* "You may go now, Cat", I heard the Third grumble and she disappeared.
"Oi, Old man, why is she so mean now?" I asked in indignation.
"I think you just got used to her spoiling you, Naruto. Normally my ANBU don't take a personal involvement with their charges." He replied, rubbing his face.
"Bullshit. You yelled at her and now she's mean", I defended my position eloquently.
He sighed once more and looked to the side, not denying my statement.
"Aha!", I shouted and pointed at him.
He cleared his throat and gave me a serious look. I sighed in resignation and sat down on the chair across from his desk and we had the talk about my status.

*Tired groaning* "I want to sleep..." I was legit about to just drop and take a nap on the street.
"Naruto..."
Shit. Of course, I'd run into her on the way home.
"Hey, Hinata... do you mind helping me to my apartment... I'm tired...", I was hoping she would notice my exhaustion and leave any questions for later.
"Hm." She nodded, put my arm around her shoulder, and helped me the rest of the way home.
"Thanks, Hina. You can stay if you want...", I told her and promptly conked out on my bed.

I woke up the next day and felt like a new man... boy...? I felt great. Hinata left some food cooked for me and left a note saying she'd be back soon. I did my daily rituals and ate Hinata's homecooked food with a silly smile on my face. Silly because she was a great cook. She'd only ever done so a couple of times, but she gave Ayame a run for her money, so there was a sort of rivalry there.
I decided it was time to check my rewards for the mission from last night.
