Chapter 51: Mates and Magic

Evelyn stepped to the side, opening the doorway for Maxine, "why don't you come inside for a cup of tea?" She asked.

Maxine stared at the girl, she looked nothing like her mother, but her eyes were just as kind. "I would like that," she said.

Evelyn followed Maxine inside the cottage and went for the kettle. It still had some water in it and she poured Maxine a cup of tea. "Here you go," she said and handed her the steaming teacup.

"Thank you," Maxine said and took a careful sip of the woodsy tea.

"You said you knew my mother?" Evelyn asked.

"I did," Maxine smiled. Evelyn reminded her of her mother in her kindness, but she sensed that this girl was always holding back from being her true self. "She was very kind to me when no one else would have been. She saved my life," Maxine confided in her.
