Chapter 48: Following the Alpha's orders

Geoffrey took Maxine's hand as they descended the large staircase. It was still rather early in the morning and only the butler noticed them. He gave Geoffrey a distinct look, but quickly turned his head when Geoffrey's eyes flashed in warning. Maxine kept her eyes focused on the floor, her usual confidence was gone and now she was nervous. What if Duke Arthur did not approve of his beta being mated to a vampire?

Geoffrey noticed her worry and squeezed her hand in reassurance. "It will be fine," he smiled softly at her. 

Maxine relaxed into the warmth of his hand, but she could not help her worries. 

Geoffrey knocked on the large oak doors of the study before he led them in. Duke Arthur was drinking a cup of coffee at this large desk when he noticed Geoffrey holding Maxine's hand. "She is not a child, Geoffrey. I am sure she could walk here by herself," he chided.
