Chapter 35: Kitty Pryde

In addition to the agents of the Sentry Secret Service, many Sentinels were also stationed nearby. Given this formidable presence, any rescue attempt by John and the others would almost certainly end in failure. The Mutant underground organization had only a few combat-capable members, with John and Lorna being the most capable fighters. Even if Eclipse joined them, it wouldn't be enough to take on the Sentinels and agents in the area.

In his different space, Max began to explore the courtyard, searching for any signs of Pulse's presence. The Mutant Placement Center, despite its name, was essentially a prison for Mutants. Even though John and the others had managed to rescue a few Mutants before, there were still a significant number of Mutants held here.

Inside the cells, each Mutant wore a prison uniform with a blue neck ring. This device was designed to suppress a Mutant's abilities and had various functions, including location tracking and the ability to deliver electric shocks.

Max had taken those he rescued earlier to a hidden lab where the snake would study the device and attempt to reverse-engineer its principles. The offer of $50,000 per person wasn't a mere suggestion; many of them likely had money or family assets hidden away before their arrests.

Most Mutants didn't trust banks and kept their wealth in cash, which Yukio could discreetly collect while assisting with the research on the neck ring.

Before entering the prison, Max had called Yukio and asked her to investigate the area around the Mutant resettlement center and prepare to deliver weapons to him. Although Yukio had wanted to stay and help, Max had insisted that she return to prepare for the mission with Viper.

As Max moved through the prison, he encountered a mix of emotions among the inmates—fear, nervousness, and a sense of resignation. They were like abandoned pets, uncertain about their futures. Max couldn't spot Pulse among them and wondered if he had been relocated so quickly. It seemed that the authorities were moving with unusual speed.

Max entered another cell, which appeared to be different from the rest. The room was made of special materials, and there was a person lying on the bed in the center. Due to the angle, he couldn't see her face clearly, but he noticed that the person's hands and feet were restrained to the hospital bed.

This was different from the others. Max approached cautiously and took a closer look. To his surprise, it wasn't a Pulse but a woman. Her name was Kitty Pryde, and her codename was Shadowcat.

Shadowcat had played a crucial role in the events at Devil's Island, but her fate had remained undisclosed in the films. She had been part of a team with characters like Wolverine and Quicksilver, helping them evade the Sentinels with her ability to phase through objects. In the end, she had sent Wolverine back in time to alter the future.

Max hadn't expected to find her here, and he couldn't help but wonder how she had been captured. However, he saw an opportunity in saving her—time travel.

Shadowcat's ability allowed her to send people's consciousnesses through time, a potential goldmine of knowledge. Additionally, her ability to phase through matter was akin to certain aspects of the Door-Door Fruit, and there might be valuable insights to gain from her.

Inexperienced experimentation behind closed doors wouldn't be enough to unlock her potential. Max decided that saving Shadowcat could be immensely beneficial.

Max's quick thinking and utilization of his Abilities were crucial in this situation. When Kitty informed him about the surveillance, biosensors, and Ability inhibition in the room, he immediately assessed the situation and realized that the Ability inhibition was likely designed for the X gene, leaving his Devil Fruit Ability unaffected.

Upon discovering the neck ring made of Adamantium and thorns inside that were integrated with Katie's bones, Max faced a challenging predicament. He attempted to shoot the ring with his gun, but the bullet was effortlessly deflected, and the ring remained unharmed.

Katie's explanation had made it clear that this was a highly secure and dangerous situation. Despite the grim circumstances, Max remained focused and determined to find a solution.

As the door Max created swung open, he acted without hesitation, pulling the trigger of his gun and firing a shot in the direction of the door. His aim was precise, and his shot was calculated, intended not only to disable any potential threats beyond the door but also to test the limits of the biosensors and Ability inhibition in the room.
