Enemies of the Church

Nidhogg POV:

Looking around and sensing that once again, no one was stronger than that demon, I knew I just had to test my luck and go back to a human world. If I wanted a challenge, I would have to go to the human world unless I found a demon lord here. But I've transversed this plane for a while and besides those three coming after me, I haven't picked up on any.

So far, from what I've noticed, I haven't met a human that was too overwhelming by themselves, as they were way more formidable in groups. Of course, I knew from the church members memories, that there were certain church members who had powerful abilities that could trouble any high-ranking demon. But they were usually on reserve or kept hidden as the church had other enemies than demons that they were fighting. However, that didn't matter, as the enemy of my enemy was not necessarily my friend.

Having only one option, I decide to return to the human world. For a brief second, I wonder what happened to the desolate worlds that I've been to and briefly ponder going back to check. But then I admonish myself. Only an idiot returns to the scene of a crime. Shaking my head, I step through my Kumon to find what awaits me at the next world.

On a B- Tier World #5582

A young man stood overlooking a field in front of him. He gazed on the hundreds of gathered people whether they were children, women, or men that were being held in cages. He briefly pitied them for a second through their cries and pleas, before remembering that this was a necessary sacrifice.

Through this taboo ritual that their lives would fuel, they would summon an actual demon. Normally, something like this wasn't a possibility, but the church forced their hand. Truthfully speaking, he didn't even know if it would work. But should it, they would have a huge target on their backs as they would have a powerful asset against the church.

"Lord Gerald, everything is ready. On your word." One of the followers' reports. This moment would define what would happen to them next. A few words needed to be said. Standing before the followers who bravely tricked, bribed, or kidnapped the people here, he looked at them with a sense of pride.

"Fellow members of the Anti-Light. Our constant struggles against the church who have persecuted us for centuries have finally come to this point. Today marks the day, where we become the heralds of destruction, unleashing the pain and suffering that was given to us back at the church tenfold. Today we summon, our own god!"

On those words, hooded figures raise their hands, chanting in the language they believed that demons spoke, mana flowing as the people in cages within the ritual begin to scream in terror. The Anti-Light members ignore their pleas, as they continue, hoping to be the first ever to successfully summon a demon.

The glyphs on the complex ritual began to glow black and purple. The eyes of the people began to glow purple as well until their bodies slumped down lifelessly to the ground. The chanting grows louder as they understand that it's working, invigorating their efforts.

Then, as quickly as it started, the night grows silent. Not even the crickets dared to chirp at that moment. As the seconds went by with nothing happening, the Anti-Light members began to get antsy. Gerald held his hand up,

"Have faith, brethren, a sign will come."

As soon as he said that the very air began to shift. All members and those that survivors that weren't a part of the ritual watched as a hole appeared in the sky. The Anti-Light members watched as a hooded ghastly being walked out of the void and stepped on the ritual circle. Looking up, they could see the hunger in its eyes, felt the power that it gave off. Unable to contain themselves, they began to cheer.

Nidhogg POV:

Stepping out of my Kumon, I immediately find myself within an obvious ritual with several shady, hooded members surrounding me. Scanning the area, there was only one who was surpisingly what I could consider strong for a human. He was a perfect candidate to test my new form on. Just as I began to take action, the sudden cheering threw me off and made me pause.

The strongest one here stepped forward and bowed before me.

"Oh great demon. You honor us with your presence. We are but humble servants who have summoned you in our battle against the pests known as the church." He announces.

For a split second, I was just all too keen on just punishing him for kneeling before me and consuming him there. Then an idea struck me. What do I have to lose if I just use these guys for my own gain? But first, I still wanted my fight to limit test.

"All I see before me is ants, who are worth nothing more than to be squashed. You dare call yourselves my servants when I can tell that you are all weak. Face me and prove your worth in battle. Impress me, and I consider lending a hand against the church." I tell them.

When I said this, I expected them to shuffle back in fear at the prospect of death, but my sensitivity to emotions from humans revealed to me that the only fear present here was from the humans that clearly were sacrifices. Just the fact alone, that each and every hooded member rose to a stance ready to fight me, was impressive. The strongest member rose to his feet.

"I know it presumptuous of me to do so, but should I fall here, I'd like you to know. I am Gerald Rawlings, leader of the Anti-Light. Although we know that there isn't a shadow of a chance at us besting you, it would please us to do nothing more than to fuel your power so that at least we know that we had a hand in the downfall of the church. MEN! ATTACK!"
