Chapter 15: Mine

Koda's eyelids sluggishly began to part. He had awoken to the sight of himself laid beneath an unfamiliar ceiling— accompanied by a soft, cushioning sensation which comforted his back.

Someone had set him down on a queen-sized bed, woven with soft fabrics and a cozy silk comforter to keep him warm. He languidly made an attempt to get up but his body only held enough strength to sit himself upright.

"The hell?" He voiced softly, upon lifting the blanket he noticed that his haori had been taken and replaced with bandages spanning all the way from his waist to his chest— almost like a mummy.

"Talk about overkill…" His pupils wandered around the bedroom, all the furniture and decor struck him as being awfully lavish. Fancy embodiment, antique lining— you name it.

Wondering where he was, Koda pried open the curtains near his bedside and peered out the window. To his dismay all that was revealed was a barren, almost withered land void of greenery and fauna, though the night limited his vision he doubted anything he could see beyond would be much better.

"How eerie, am I even in the same district anymore?" His unease was bolstered by the fact that he couldn't sense even a single person in the area, both Yasui's and Okita's presence was nowhere near him. He was quite literally, in the middle of nowhere.

Someone had brought him here, he remembered that much. Though he was led to believe they meant well, it didn't hurt to keep his guard up. His Asauchi was placed on one of the nightstands, so even if he somehow was faced with a threat he'd be able to defend himself.

He considered lying back down in order to recover his strength, but was interrupted by the sudden creaking of floorboards as the shadow of a figure became visible behind the rooms sliding door. Unsure how to react, Koda spared no time reaching for his Asauchi— firmly grasping it in his palm as he prepared himself.

'No presence, no sound, that's not good, that's not good at all!' A single bead of sweat slowly dripped from his forehead onto the mattress, his palms grew sticky as something deep within his gut warned him about the person who stood inches away from him.

"That's no way to treat your benefactor" A cold effeminate voice reverberated from behind the wooden door. It slid open to reveal a woman with long silky raven hair that hung loosely on her shoulders, she wore a faint uncanny smile accompanied by heavy eyelids that made her sclera look like small slits of white.

She donned a simple black haori that complemented her appearance well, making her look dignified and courtly. Based solely on looks, she was fairly attractive. However, Koda's instincts were able to peer into what lay slightly beyond her figure.

It was that smile, something about that discrete simper refused to allow Koda to take her orderly appearance for granted. That woman wasn't cordial, not even remotely so. He couldn't put it into words but deep down he was aware, despite him not being able to read her Spiritual Pressure there had to be a reason behind the apprehension he felt just by looking at her.

She was without a doubt cold-blooded, he couldn't explain why but he trusted his gut more than anything.

"Ara, it's rude to stare you know?" A slight chuckle escaped her scarlet lips as she drew closer to him. She had purposefully hid her Reiryoku from Koda, curious to see how he would react to her based on appearance alone.

The fact that he seemed to audit her with his head rather than his lower half, managed to slightly impress her.

But only slightly.

With each step she took, a shiver would jolt down his spine. Not only did her smile terrify him, but her eyes as well. They were hollow, completely absent of light. It was as if he was staring directly into the void, it reminded him of the abyss he had faced following his death.

"Don't be so silent, I want to hear your voice" She gently sat herself on the bed, staring at him with an almost ethereal gaze as she awaited his response.

A lump formed in his throat as he stared at his abashed self reflected in her eyes. The last thing he wanted to do was embitter the woman, but he wasn't sure what would tick her off, and what wouldn't.

"Wh-who are you?" He had to start somewhere, he did his best to cast aside his stutter— but the fact that she refused to even blink wasn't doing him any favors. Every little micro-movement he made was clearly being monitored, a small part of him hoped that this was all a bad dream and he was about to wake up any minute now.

A brief sigh marooned the woman's mouth, her disappointment made apparent as her lips curled into a mild frown.

"Okita didn't tell you what I look like?" The mention of his name instantaneously jolted Koda's memory. The dots started to connect as he eyed the woman with dread, if his assumption was correct—

"Are you…" He tried to ease his hesitation, hoping that he was about to be proven wrong.

"Yachiru?" Something in the woman's eyes had grown colder than before, Koda slowly began to panic— chiding himself for somehow managing to upset her.

"Don't call me that" She warned, shifting towards him as she brought her face up to his. He wanted to avert his gaze but was fearful of worsening her mood.

"Call me Unohana, Yachiru is too distant— I don't like it" Koda couldn't even begin to understand why she was reprimanding him, especially considering he hadn't known her name in the first place. However, right now it was better to comply first and ask questions later.

"So-sorry…Unohana" Again, he had no clue as to why he was being chewed out but he prioritized keeping his head where it was over his pride.

"Much better, now get some rest, we'll have a much more in depth conversation once you've recovered" The tension seemed to simmer down as her algid stare started to dissipate, causing Koda to heave a massive internal sigh of relief.

Despite the woman intimidating him to the core, a part of him was still grateful for her help, excessive or not. Be that as it may, he'd much rather return to his lodgings with Yasui, he looked forward to celebrating killing six Soul Reapers with her.

"I'm feeling a little better now, I'm thankful for your help but I ought to head back, Yasui's probably overly worried about me as usual" He leaned over to the side of the bed and prepared to make his departure.

"No, you're staying here" This time her animosity wasn't so discrete. A chilling sensation encompassed Koda as it felt like bugs were crawling under his skin. He was frozen in place, sweat racing down his skin as a domineering presence stood merely inches away from him.

"Ya—" Before he could correct himself Unohana continued to speak with an obvious hint of venom in her voice.

"I took the liberty of freeing you from that waste of a mentor, I didn't want to have to say this outloud since I thought you to be rather intelligent" She gripped his arm with her hand, even if he was in prime condition doing so much as budging would be nothing short of an impossible feat. "But you're not leaving me with much choice, you're mine now, Okita's kept me from you for long enough"

A pulling force dragged his back onto the mattress, her left arm alone was more than enough to render him utterly helpless. In that split moment the difference in strength between the two had been made abundantly clear, his life was completely within her grasp.

"I don't like being forceful, so I suggest you oblige, it'll do you more good than harm, understood?" She had her sights on him for a while now, and trusted Okita enough to nurture him properly. But after watching him struggle against the saddest excuse for a Lieutenant she had ever witnessed, she had lost all faith in him.

He was better off with her, she could make him stronger, she had monitored him enough to understand what kind of person he was. He belonged with her, she could feel it. Okita was a blind fool for thinking himself and Koda were even remotely alike.

A lump formed in Koda's throat as he winced under her might— he felt like a fish clamped under the talons of a hawk.

"U-understood" He wasn't ready to die just yet, wasting his second chance was the last thing he wanted. If he had to listen to this woman then so be it, he remembered Okita's warning clear as day.

'If you plan on refusing her, you'll have to kill her' He knew he had no chance.

For now, at least.

"Good, now sleep" He planned on (albeit reluctantly) doing just that, but his eyes widened upon the sight of Unohana welcoming herself under the sheets, dragging his body closer to her with one arm still clenching him to prevent any attempts at escape.

"What are you doing?" Thankfully he was old enough to not let his hormones get the better of him, but sleeping in the same house as his "kidnapper" and sleeping in the same bed as her were two drastically different things.

"What? A woman can't sleep in her own bed?" She countered nonchalantly.

"Maybe…I could sleep somewhere else?" Unohana rolled her eyes as she looked at him with a miffed expression, pushing his head onto the pillows as her clasp grew tighter.

"This is the only bed here, and if you so much as suggest sleeping outside I'm just going to knock you out alright?" Not interested in finding out what a punch from her felt like, he turned his back to her and tried to pretend as if she wasn't there.

Emphasis on tried.

She didn't care much for his antics and simply pressed herself against his back. 'You should be ecstatic to get to share a bed with me…' Though it wouldn't kill him to be a bit more reactive, she knew what she looked like.

Meanwhile Koda was lamenting the fact that he had somehow gone from having a deathmatch with a Soul Reaper to being forced in bed with a bonafide crazy lady. 'Tomorrow is going to be a long day…' He grimaced.

This is quite the predicament.

I'm already awake, but even whilst she's asleep I can't seem to wiggle my way out of her grasp— how does that even work? I've considered waking her up but yesterday has taught me that even the most miniscule of things could set her off.

Though it doesn't seem like I have much of a choice, I'm sure there's at least a small part of her that I can reason with.

Probably.

"Uhm, Unohana?" I gently tapped her on the shoulder to which I received a disgruntled groan alongside her pulling me in even closer than she already had.

I winced in response to the increased tension my ribs were facing.

At this rate she might actually break something, my bones aren't built to endure women with freak gorilla strength. Better not say that aloud though.

This time my palm gently nudged her cheek, and at long last she showed signs of waking up.

"A bit longer…" She murmured whilst still half-asleep.

"Can I at least get up?" If you're not going to wake up you could at least let me, I've been cooped up in this bed for long enough.

"So you can run away?" Christ she's possessive.

"To be fair, I highly doubt I'm faster than you…" I can't believe I'm actually having to persuade someone to let me get out of bed, on second thought I'm glad Yasui isn't here to see this.

"Hm, that's true" Finally.

Her arms slowly uncoiled themselves from my torso as I allowed myself to stretch. I have no idea what she did but without her going full anaconda on me, my muscles somehow feel better than prior to the mission.

Oh well, I for one am not complaining.

"You can take one of my haori's from that wardrobe, they should fit you" I nodded as I picked up one of the jet-black garments and quickly fastened it on.

It was actually extremely comfortable, I could get used to wearing this.

"Looks good on you, I'll make our breakfast and afterwards we can begin your training" Something about the way she said "training" sent shivers down my spine.

I don't have a good feeling about this…
