Chapter 6: Wanted

Hannah nodded, "Detective Hunter and Detective McCall were iconic figures in the LAPD during the late '80s and '90s. Of course, I know them. Especially Detective McCall, she was one of the few outstanding female detectives in the male-dominated era and has been an idol for all female officers."

"They live on Maryland Street. Do you know them?" She suddenly turned to look at Jack.

Not only did Jack know them, but in his previous life, almost all Chinese people born in the '70s and '80s knew this duo. "Hunter" was one of the first American TV shows that many Chinese families watched after getting their first television set.

"They live together? Are you saying they're married?" Jack keenly sensed that something was off. In his previous life, he remembered clearly that McCall married a doctor out of the blue, and that episode made countless Chinese people frustrated and even made him hold a grudge against TV show writers for the rest of his life.

"Of course, it's been over a decade. They are also one of LAPD's most admired exemplary couples. The department invites them to participate in commemorative events every year."

Jack let out a sigh of relief. If Hunter and McCall's relationship could deviate from the original storyline, he would have more confidence in saving Zoe's fate.

The next day, during the briefing meeting.

Acting Commander Wade Gray walked into the noisy meeting room with a grim expression. The officers, who were whispering to each other, immediately fell silent.

Gray's slightly middle-aged, chubby black face looked even more dark today. He took out a stack of A4 papers and distributed them to everyone's desks, then spoke loudly.

"This is an internal wanted order for Lance Selby. Yesterday, he violated parole regulations, and if his danger level was rated on a scale from one to ten, he would be a level twelve."

"This man was previously sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder with a carpenter's hammer. Whoever brings him back from the streets will receive heartfelt commendations from the higher-ups, along with two tickets to the Super Bowl on Sunday."

Hearing the whispers below, Gray paused, and his stern gaze swept over everyone.

"Pay attention, there is intelligence showing that this man might have an accomplice and is likely to be carrying automatic weapons. Everyone must be careful."

The wanted order showed a disheveled white man, approximately 35 years old, with an ordinary appearance except for a pair of prominent bulging eyes.

Jack and Angela arrived at the armory, where Angela signaled for him to take two M16 automatic rifles in addition to his original Ithaca-12 shotgun.

After checking the firearms, Angela asked Jack, "How's your proficiency with long guns?"

Jack carefully placed the equipment in the trunk and replied, "It's about the same as with handguns. I'm excellent with iron sights at 100 meters."

As they hit the road, and Angela didn't give any other instructions, Jack became curious, "Aren't we going to try and find the fugitive?"

Angela seemed confident, "Two other teams are actively searching for leads. We just need to focus on internal communications. Capturing this kind of dangerous felon isn't allowed to be done alone; they will definitely call for backup."

Compared to the fugitive, Angela clearly cared more about her lunch.

"What are we having for lunch today? The same pan-fried dish as yesterday? I really liked the taste of that."

Jack silently criticized her for being a foodie and answered honestly, "I made three portions of scallion-oil noodles this morning, but Hannah took most of it. I still have some rice here. The side dishes are garlic broccoli and fried pork chops. We'll need to find a place with a microwave to heat it up."

"No problem, leave it to me. I know where to find a microwave."

Angela tilted her head and looked at him, her voice tinged with curiosity, "Jack, are you really only 21 years old?"

Jack sighed, "If you were forced to be on your own at 18, relying on a small grocery store left by your parents to support yourself and save up for college, you would have to learn to cook and take care of yourself."

"In fact, I've always been puzzled. Cooking tutorials can easily be found online in modern America, and making your own meals saves money and satisfies your taste buds. Why do so many young people in this country prefer to eat only hamburgers?"

Angela laughed, "I guess that's why I doubted your age. Your words and actions make people feel like you're closer to those old-timers. Only people born in the disco-pop era of the '70s would have such thoughts like you do."

Jack nodded in agreement, "Indeed. Compared to Lucy, I have more in common with John."

He hoped to establish this mature young man image soon to avoid worrying about being exposed as a traverser all the time. Although Americans might not necessarily have that concept, there were still priests who performed exorcisms part-time to this day. It would be more troublesome if people suspected him of being possessed by demons.

Angela looked at the young man driving earnestly and stared at his overly handsome face, slightly lost in thought.

"What's wrong?" After waiting for a long time without hearing her speak, Jack turned to look at her.

"It's nothing. I was just thinking, if all the young people in this country were as mature and disciplined as you, our job would be so much easier." She touched her slightly flushed cheek, trying to hide her wandering thoughts.

The morning's street patrol was quite easy, as they only issued two traffic tickets, and soon it was noon.

They went to the same place they had lunch yesterday, and Angela energetically went to the nearby convenience store to get the hot dishes while Jack bought two bottles of Coke. As soon as they sat down, they saw two other rookie teams arrive together.

"Hey, John, Lucy, any news on the fugitive?" Lucy shook her head, but John seemed excited, eagerly sitting down and saying, "We found an accomplice of Lance Selby, named Dallas. He owns a gym. After lunch, we're going to check it out."

Jack nodded, "If there's any new information, remember to report it on the internal channel promptly. This guy is very dangerous and not something one or two teams can handle alone."

After lunch, Jack and Angela continued their patrol. The daily routine of a patrol officer was monotonous and boring. In fact, in his previous life, despite the prevalence of firearms and rampant violent crimes in the America, over half of the frontline patrol officers spent their entire careers without ever firing a gun.

Of course, in this strange American TV world, Jack never imagined that he could lead a peaceful life, and being just a street patrol officer wasn't his planned career destination. Perhaps joining the FBI would be a good option.

Of course, the higher one climbed, the more freedom they had, but it also meant higher risks.
