Chapter 22: imposter

James sat on the log while staring at nothing in particular. The pain of seeing her with someone else was destroying him slowly. She was the first woman he had come to love but, she now belonged to someone else. Why did she give him hope when she knew very well that she had feelings for someone else?! He asked himself as he angrily crashed the flower that he was holding. "Son, I knew you would be here." Mrs Lowrence said as she walked towards her son and sat next to him. "She seems to be happy around him. I can't ruin that for her." James said while looking at the sky where the sun was about to set. He had come to know how kind hearted jade was and he could not bear to see her in pain, and with the way she talked about her childhood experiences, James could tell that she was trying to be strong, so why would he try to destroy her happiness?. "Are you going to give up on her just like that? They are not married yet and I don't really think she is as happy as you think she is. Here; Read this and you will decide if you are going to fight for your love or you will just give up without even trying." Mrs Lowrence told her son while handing her a small piece of paper that she was given by Jade when they hugged.

The content on the paper was not that long but it was written in such a way that James could understand what was happening. "Please help me because I don't think that I can get out of this mess on my own. The king is keeping me against my will." Those were the words that were written using charcoal and after James read the letter he got up from where he had been sitting. "That man is..." "He is the king James, so you have to be careful with your words around him otherwise you might get yourself in trouble." Mrs Lowrence interrupted her son.

Alvin who had been watching and listening to the mother_Son dual through the widow couldn't help but smile. He had never been outsmarted by anyone but this time, his woman did it right under his nose. How naive! If she thought that she would escape from his paws, she was sorely mistaken. He thought as he continued to look at the two people who were busy talking without knowing that someone else was listening to them.

*******. ********. *******

In the kitchen Jade was busy washing the utensils so that she could vent out her frustrations but her friend kept on nagging her with a lot of questions. "You have not told me his name yet." Lydia brought up the conversation which Jade was trying to avoid. "Where does he live?.. Does he come from a rich family?... Did you two meet at the border?.... Tell me everything Jade and don't miss a detail." Lydia spoke excitedly. Jade who had finished washing the utensils wiped her hands and sat on the small stool that was in the corner. "His name is Alvin and he....." Jade did not finish her words because Alvin showed up. He had discarded the smile he had and Jade could tell that things were not going very well but Lydia who knew nothing about the man walked towards him. "Brother in law,....,!She called Alvin to gain his attention which was on the girl sitting at the stool. "I don't think you should call me that milady. You are not Jade's sister and I don't like it when you call me that." Came Alvin's cold words that shocked the girls. Jade who was angered by the way Alvin spoke to her friend stood up so that she could say what was on her mind but before she could say anything, Alvin had already pushed Lydia against the wall while squeezing her neck. "Speak up! Where is she. You better talk now while I'm still patient. TALK!" Jade quickly rushed towards Lydia who was still under mercies of Alvin. "Let her go! You can do whatever you want, but please don't hurt the people who are close to me." Jade pleaded with tearful eyes but Alvin continued to choke Lydia until black veins started to pop out. What was happening?!

Jade could not believe her eyes. The Lydia she knew had transformed into a hideous monster, her eyes looked like they would pop out of their sockets and she kept on laughing hysterically. "You are not Lydia! Where did you take my friend....where did you take her?" Jade asked as she pointed at the woman who had fallen on the floor. Alvin had seen the red mark on Lydia's wrist which he had come to know that it belonged to the elves who had been out casted. "Why don't you go look for her yourself. I hope she's already dead! Alvin we are waiting for your fall and once that day comes, I will make sure that I will be the one to dig your grave." Saying those words, the elf vanished into thin air.

"We should go back to the palace immediately. This place is not safe for you." Alvin's words were serious and his expressions unreadable. Elves have always been the most loyal creatures and if one of them betrayed their race, they would be sent away from Seinx or they would be killed mercilessly. But what would they be after in Lowrence' house? he asked himself.

"Come-on let's go." Jade followed him outside the kitchen where they met Mrs Lowrence. Though Jade wanted to stay back a little longer, she knew her friend was in danger and the thought of losing her made her eyes moisten with tears. "Madame, it was a pleasure to meet you but we will be leaving right now." He was not asking for her approval and when Mrs Lowrence parted her lips so that she could speak, Alvin held jade's hand and they walked out of the house.
