Chapter 33: A Heroic Deed

Lin Qiong, holding his stomach, looked at the man, and then said, "If I told you I went to do a heroic deed, would you believe it?"

Fu Xingyun raised an eyebrow, "A snack stall was on the verge of closing, and you did a heroic deed by eating everything?"

"..."

Lin Qiong contemplated for a moment, "You could put it that way."

Fu Xingyun looked at him, his long fingers tapping the wheelchair one after another, "Weren't you going for a night run?"

"Yes."

"Then what's with the sauce on your mouth?"

Lin Qiong wiped the sauce from his mouth and protested, "Do you suspect me?"

Fu Xingyun said, "No."

Lin Qiong asked, "Then why are you looking at me like that?"

"What kind of look?"

"A peculiar gaze."

Fu Xingyun replied, "I'm just raising reasonable questions."

Lin Qiong felt deeply troubled, "What about trust between people?"

Fu Xingyun looked at him in silence for a moment, "Do you have any?"

Lin Qiong pouted, "It seems like you men are all the same. Once you get something, you don't know how to cherish it. Do you remember what you said to me on our wedding day?"

Fu Xingyun: ?

Lin Qiong: "Whether in sickness or in health, in poverty or in wealth..."

Fu Xingyun looked at Lin Qiong, "Get to the point."

Lin Qiong's expression became serious, "Mutual loyalty, mutual trust!"

Fu Xingyun raised an eyebrow, "Is it my fault?"

Lin Qiong sighed with relief, "As long as you know."

"..."

The man cleared his throat, trying not to be swayed by the person in front of him, "Why do you eat snacks after going for a night run?"

Lin Qiong remained composed, "It tempted me."

The young man argued with a righteous tone, as if he were a scoundrel who would run off as soon as he put on his pants, Fu Xingyun questioned, "You're not at fault?"

Lin Qiong said, "They just happen to appear in front of me on the road I choose for my night run. With so many paths in the world, why do they specifically show up on the one I'm running on at night? Isn't that intentional?"

Then Lin Qiong continued to talk, moving his lips, "Even though I had snacks I also acted heroically. The good deeds outweigh the bad."

Fu Xingyun asked, "Do you think I'll believe that?"

Lin Qiong looked at him with pure eyes and said naturally, "Why not?"

Then he blushed shyly and lowered his head, "Isn't it all about giving absolute loyalty and trust between lovers? Just like my love for you, unwavering."

The man's fingers tapping on the wheelchair froze for a moment, and he stopped.

Damn, he's really good at this.

Fu Xingyun took a deep breath and asked, "So, you went for a night run and ended up spending three hours eating supper?"

Lin Qiong nodded and then suddenly realized something.

"Why are you still awake at this hour?"

The man's body tensed.

Looking at the brightly lit house and the television that was on, Lin Qiong tentatively asked, "Are you waiting for me?"

Fu Xingyun responded firmly, "No."

Lin Qiong was puzzled, "Then why aren't you sleeping?"

"I don't feel like it."

After hearing that, Lin Qiong simply responded with an "Oh" and didn't press further.

Picking up his phone from the coffee table, Lin Qiong intended to go upstairs. However, as he touched the phone, the screen suddenly lit up, showing a missed call. Lin Qiong glanced at it; the call was from half an hour ago, and the caller's ID displayed "Baby."

Lin Qiong immediately approached Fu Xingyun. "Did you call me?"

Fu Xingyun turned away.

Lin Qiong moved closer to him. "Why did you call me?"

A hint of embarrassment appeared on the man's face, and then he slightly turned away, pushing his wheelchair towards the elevator.

Like a graceful butterfly, Lin Qiong swiftly followed him. "I'll push you."

Fu Xingyun looked at him, struggling to find words.

Understanding his silence, Lin Qiong coaxed and said, "I know you definitely weren't waiting for me."

"..."

Once Fu Xingyun entered the room, Lin Qiong also returned to his room, took a shower, and went to sleep.

In the misty bathroom, Lin Qiong took off his shirt and stepped into the shower. His waist and abdomen were fair, lacking the same muscular strength as Fu Xingyun but still toned with no excess fat. However, there was a noticeable bruise on his side.

The next morning, Lin Qiong was awakened by the ringing of his phone.

In a drowsy state, he picked up the phone.

Wang Cheng's voice came from the other side. "Lin Qiong."

Lin Qiong mumbled, "Yes?"

"We're going to the film set in three days. Get your luggage packed in these next few days." Wang Cheng spoke gently, mainly to convey a message to that old pervert, so they wouldn't be in touch every few minutes.

Squinting his eyes, Lin Qiong replied, "Got it."

As he was about to end the call, Wang Cheng said, "Wait, don't hang up!"

Suddenly, the other person's voice escalated, jolting Lin Qiong wide awake.

Lin Qiong rubbed his face and asked, "Is there something else?"

Wang Cheng inquired, "Have you done a good deed today?"

Lin Qiong replied hesitantly, "Not yet today."

"What about yesterday?"

"I did a good deed yesterday."

"Where?"

"At the street food stalls."

To Lin Qiong's surprise, Wang Cheng responded with a casual "Oh."

Frowning, Lin Qiong pouted, "What kind of reaction is that?"

"It's a normal reaction."

Lin Qiong questioned, "Why aren't you asking me how I did the good deed?"

Wang Cheng's voice sounded indifferent, "Did you save a street food stall that was about to go bankrupt by eating everything they had?"

"..."

That familiar feeling.

Lin Qiong reiterated, "I acted heroically."

Wang Cheng's tone remained nonchalant, "I know, I know."

"Really!"

"Really, really."

"..."

"By the way, have you gained weight in the past few days?"

Lin Qiong shook his head, puzzled, "No, I haven't."

Wang Cheng sighed in relief, "That's good. The director thinks your appearance during the makeup test is exactly what they want. No need to gain or lose weight."

Lin Qiong sensed that there was more to Wang Cheng's words. "What are you trying to say?"

Wang Cheng advised, "Just don't act heroically in the next few days."

"..."

During breakfast, Lin Qiong told Fu Xingyun about his upcoming work.

Fu Xingyun was eating his congee and this time there was no awkwardness, he got straight to the point, "How long will you be gone?"

Lin Qiong counted the days, "Probably a week."

Fu Xingyun asked, "Is it the same job as before?"

He had ordered investigations into Lin Qiong many times, but the information he received never matched the person in front of him. It was as though the person in the reports was a completely different individual compared to the Lin Qiong he knew. However, he also knew that Lin Qiong was a rather obscure figure.

Lin Qiong nodded, "Yes, this time it's an official job."

Fu Xingyun looked at Lin Qiong's breakfast, which consisted of only two boiled eggs, and asked, "Is this all you're eating?"

Before Lin Qiong could respond, he continued, "Did you eat too much while acting heroically yesterday?"

Lin Qiong's face fell, "I'm watching my weight."

Fu Xingyun observed Lin Qiong from head to toe, then didn't say anything.

After finishing his meal, Lin Qiong collapsed on the sofa like a salted fish. He later went out to take out the trash, just like every morning, and as usual, he encountered the old ragged man.

Rain or shine, the old man waited by the garbage bins.

The old man watched as Lin Qiong, with slow and somewhat clumsy movements, disposed of the trash.

"Got injured again?"

Lin Qiong immediately perked up, "No."

The old man asked, "Then why are you moving so strangely?"

Lin Qiong replied, "I acted heroically yesterday."

The old man looked at Lin Qiong suspiciously and Lin Qiong had an expression that seemed to say, "Praise me, come on, praise me."

The old man responded, "...Not bad."

Lin Qiong clearly detected the dismissive tone in the old man's words, "You don't believe me."

The old man retorted, "I never said that."

Lin Qiong's fair face creased with disappointment, "If you don't believe me, that's fine."

The old man looked at the dejected young man, about to say something, but then heard Lin Qiong mutter, "After all, heroes are always lonely."

-----

With the resources in hand and work about to begin, Wang Cheng was preparing to return to the company to report to the higher-ups. This was the first high-quality resource he and Lin Qiong had worked on together in the two years since they started working together.

When the senior leaders of the company heard the news, they were baffled.

"Lin Qiong?"

Wang Cheng nodded proudly, "Yes."

One of the leaders asked, "Do we have someone like him in our company?"

Wang Cheng hesitated, "Well..."

Lin Qiong had debuted two years ago, but he was still considered a newcomer.

After the leaders saw the contract from the production team, they were surprised, "They really chose Lin Qiong for this film?"

Wang Cheng nodded again.

They looked at the names of the director and producers, all well-known figures in the industry. "How was he selected?"

Wang Cheng explained, "The film wanted to use a newcomer."

The leader was puzzled, "But hasn't he been in the industry for two years already?"

In theory, Lin Qiong didn't quite qualify as a newcomer anymore.

Wang Cheng summed it up concisely, "He's still relatively unknown."

Afterward, Wang Cheng added, "And he has one very distinctive feature."

The leader inquired, "What is it?"

Wang Cheng said, "He looks the same in person as he does in photos."

After the meeting with the leaders, Wang Cheng left the office. As he exited the building, several people greeted him, an unusual occurrence.

Because he didn't have a car, he had to take the bus to get back home. When he boarded the bus, there were only a few empty seats left. He took a few steps forward and sat down in one of them. In front of him were two high school girls.

"Have you seen the news on social media?"

"What's going on?"

"An attempted robbery happened on East Street yesterday, and a guy who intervened was posted all over the internet. He's quite handsome!"

"Really? I need to check it out."

One of the girls eagerly opened her social media app.

The search results for the term "intervening hero" were flooding the platform, and they clicked on a post related to the attempted robbery that had happened on East Street the day before.

The social media post included surveillance footage and videos from passersby. The video showed a street food vendor's cart parked by the roadside, and not long after, a robber armed with a knife appeared.

The owner of the pancake stall was so frightened that she couldn't say a word and collapsed on the ground, clutching tightly to the black bag slung diagonally across her waist. That bag held her husband's life savings.

Not long after, a figure suddenly appeared and rushed towards the scene like a cannonball, engaging in a scuffle with the robber. Although the young man wasn't entirely dominant during the fight, he kept getting back up every time he was thrown off and continued to approach the assailant. Soon, the police arrived.

Fortunately, the young man didn't get seriously injured during the scuffle. In gratitude, the pancake stall owner gave him a generous portion of pancakes. When some people came to shoot a short video and interview him, they found the young man sitting on the side of the road, munching on pancakes.

With his cheeks puffed out, he looked at the unexpected camera, appearing somewhat like a guilty mouse caught stealing, his face filled with confusion.

"Can we interview you?"

The young man, with pancake crumbs at the corners of his mouth, asked, "Can you blur my face?"

"Is there a specific reason for that?"

The young man took another bite of the pancake. "I was out for a night run."

"..."

"Of course." With that, the interviewer blurred the surroundings, leaving only the young man's handsome face visible.

"Can we start the interview now?"

The young man nodded, "Sure."

"What's your name?"

"Lei Feng."
