Sofie found herself standing before King Alois, her former husband, who had aged considerably since their parting. Wrinkles adorned his face, marking the passage of time.
"How have you been?" King Alois inquired, attempting small talk.
Unwilling to engage in trivialities, Sofie replied firmly, "Your Majesty, I assume you didn't summon me just to ask about my well-being."
The king lightly rubbed his chin, shifting the topic to a more delicate matter. "I heard you have another child. Is Duke Welden the father? I didn't know that the world is so small, you're hiding right under my nose, and I didn't realize."
Sofie's eyes flashed with indignation, resenting the implication that she had numerous lovers, making it difficult to determine the father of her child. "Of course, Your Majesty. I am loyal to the man I love."
Still, the king extended a subtle invitation, stating, "You are still welcome here."
