Chapter 60: Unexpected

In Marcus's rush to catch up to the stranger, he'd failed to realize just how imposing the wall in front of him was.

'It's a lot bigger up close.'

The wall stood at about thirty feet and stretched around the entire perimeter of the inner city, so much so that Marcus's couldn't even see where it ended.

The stone on the wall was extremely neat and uniform and in direct contrast with the forest surrounding it. There were no leaves or foliage present on the wall to indicate it's age or condition, and it seemed as if it was newly constructed without a blemish in sight. Although, this couldn't be true due to the age of the Uceris Kingdom.

Marcus wasn't sure how long said kingdom had been around for, but he was aware that they'd been around for at least over a century, so the gate should have experienced some wear and tear by now.

The gate in the center of the wall he was located at was also just as magnificent and enormous as the wall that surrounded it. The wooden gate also seemed to emit a faint trace of mana as Marcus's eyes gazed on it from beneath his blindfold.

Though for some reason he wasn't able to see the flow of mana particles nearly as smoothly as during the night. Marcus made sure to take a mental note of this as he switched focus to look towards the two guards quickly approaching him.

"Oi! Whattya' think your doing? The line starts over there," the guard spoke whilst pointing in the direction of the line of people behind Marcus.

Marcus didn't even bother looking to where the over-weight excuse of a guard had pointed. He knew he'd skipped the line, but he didn't care. The stranger had done the same thing as him and no one spoke ill of it, so why should he have to wait in line if that man didn't.

Plus, Marcus was about to voice that the stranger about to pass the gate instructed him to follow, but he was about to find out just how little they cared for a seemingly blind orphan.

"I'm with him," Marcus pointed at the stranger who seemed to be ignoring the ruckus going on behind him. "If you'd just ask the stranger behind you, I'm sure he'll-

Whilst Marcus was finishing to speak, the skinner guard that stood to the left of Marcus started gurgling the snot in his nose. A grotesque snorting sound occurred just before a lob of snot infused spit landed on Marcus left cheek.

The uncouth guard, who'd spit on Marcus, rubbed away the remaining line of spit that trailed down his lips whilst his partner laughed beside him. Clearly, neither had any respect for the blind boy in front of them, and after they got closer and realized he was just some omen, they'd threw what little civility they had through the window and decided to make sure the little monstrosity knew its place.

"Listen here half-breed, no one here's gonna be fooled by your filthy lies and excuses", the skinnier guard spoke as Marcus used his robe to rub off the snot infused spit.

"So piss off fore' I lose my patience."

With those final words, the skinner guard uttered a incantation that caused the earth in front of Marcus to slowly form into a decently sized pillar that was going to head straight towards Marcus's chest.

The surrounding crowd snickered and showed obvious disdain towards the little cretin who had the gall to skip past the queue as if he were someone important.

They'd been watching the entire time and were enjoying watching the disgusting creature being utterly humiliated.

The attack that came from the guard was clearly not life threatening judging by its slow speed and lackluster incantation, but it was definitely enough to leave a small boy like Marcus incapacitated for at least a few hours if it managed to land.

The guard knew this and so he only had the intention of severely wounding Marcus rather than killing him due to the strict laws surrounding killing omens within the Uceris Kingdom.

Now, one might wonder why such a thing was the case. After all, omens weren't seen as humans and were more akin to monsters judging by Marcus's past treatment ,so why was it that killing them within the Uceris kingdom of all places was so heavily restricted?

This was a valid question to ask of course; however, for now it wasn't the main focus here. Right now, Marcus finding a way inside was.

While all this was happening, the stranger at the gate stopped to turn around to see how things would unfold. It was unknown what the man was thinking as he stood there simply observing.

'Hm. What will you do now,' the stranger wondered whilst watching Marcus.

The guards and even the crowd who'd been skipped by the man entirely forgot about the individual and easily changed their focus to a less threatening target after realizing he wasn't with the stranger from earlier.

The only ones who hadn't forgotten about the stranger were the two white-haired women from earlier. Clearly they weren't as inattentive as the crowd surrounding them and only had their gazes glued to the most dangerous individual present.

Once the attack finished manifesting, a medium sized snake-like pillar of rock jutted out from the ground and quickly approached Marcus.

Most thought the little monster would be sent flying right back into the forest from whence he came. Other less intelligent people assumed the guards were trying to kill Marcus and thought he'd be crushed like a pancake.

Although, only the stranger and the two women, who had now switched their attention to Marcus, watched in anticipation for what was to come next.

When the attack was only five meters from the seemingly blind omen, a scene occurred that left most of the crowd stunned.

The stranger once again merely smirked.

One of the young women with white hair raised an eyebrow at what happened, and the other had barely concealed surprise written across her features.

Marcus had skillfully sidestepped the approaching pillar of rock and only the sound of timber being snapped was heard to indicate the attack's power and intent.

Marcus didn't even turn to look at the damage the attacked caused as he continued to coldly stare in the direction of two guards.

Silence permeated the surroundings and only Marcus's clearly annoyed voice rang out to end it.

"Are you finished?"
