Strange Voice

"Marcus, our race are descendants of very grotesque and vile species known as Wraiths and as such we are known by the people of Terra as Omens."

Marcus's father seemed to be visibly disgusted at the mention of the word 'omen'.

It seemed even mentioning the word elicited deep rooted hatred for the word itself and the people who would categorize his son as such.

Liam wasn't bothered by the fact that others called him such a thing because he had already developed a tolerance to the word.

This made him indifferent to such an insult. However, he had a son now, and because he had past experience with the people who categorized him and others like him as omens, he knew that his son would face those very same people one day and this infuriated him.

However, Marcus did not share in his father's anger. As Marcus observed his father he became confused and slightly scared.

He was confused because he couldn't understand the concept of being hated purely because you were different from someone else. It was foolish and irrational in his eyes, and as such didn't think the feelings his father were showing were warranted.

His fears stemmed from the fact that his father was enraged. He had never truly seen his father angry like this before.

Of course, there were times he'd seen his father angry but they were for parental reasons like not waking up in time for training or not doing a chore you were tasked with.

This rage was different though. It was disturbing to say the least and if Marcus looked close enough he could of sworn the area around his father visibly darkened.

It was like his father had become an entirely different person from the man he once knew. Not a father or a husband to his mother but a beast, a beast who's anger and appetite could only be sated with the blood of his enemies. Marcus was afraid, afraid of his own father.

Liam stopped when he noticed the state of his son. He reprimanded himself for giving in to his darker emotions.

It would seem that even as one grew older, you couldn't completely erase the psychological effects mana possessed over one's mind.

Liam decided to take a deep breath and continue his lecture from earlier.

"As omens, we are often persecuted and mistreated for our origins. In some cases, rightfully so but one individual can not represent an entire race son."

Marcus recovered from his earlier fright and was once again listening attentively to his father. He seemed to have forgotten the original purpose in them coming here.

His father , on the other hand, hadn't forgotten but thought it vital for his son to know this information as soon as possible so Marcus would not be as unprepared as he was was when he was venturing around the world of Terra.

"I know this is a lot to take in but you must understand that the relic you wear must never be taken off when you associate yourself with others," Liam said. "Otherwise, doing so will only bring you pain.

"Do you understand?"

"Y-Yes... I think so."

Content with his son's response, Liam moved on to his original purpose in bringing Marcus here.

That purpose was of course to train his son.

"Setting the earlier matter aside for now, I want you to sit down and meditate. Empty your mind of any unnecessary thoughts and just breathe."

Marcus followed his fathers instructions and sat down. After doing so he closed his eyes, emptied his mind and exhaled.

"Good, now just relax and I'll take care of the rest."

Marcus didn't know what his father meant in the last part of his statement but he chose to ignore it and let his father continue what he was doing.

Suddenly, the already shadowy forest grew darker. What little light that did shine through the treetops disappeared into thin air and only a world of grey and black remained.

Marcus had no idea what his father was doing while he was meditating, but he did feel a sense of relief and comfort wash over him in this world devoid of light. He couldn't explain it but he felt... at peace.

Then suddenly everything went dark.

"Huh... where am I? Dad?!"

Marcus had found himself in a pitch-black space without anything else aside from himself and the all-encompassing darkness.

Marcus was startled and confused as to why the forest had disappeared but he didn't feel threatened by the darkness. In fact, he could almost feel as if it was embracing him like a mother embracing her new born son. Marcus could get used to this feeling.

"Hmmm. Liam is that you? What are you doing here?

A voice suddenly brought Marcus out of his silent revelry.

"I thought you retired," the voice said. "Are you finally done playing house."

Marcus was confused by the voices mention of his father. What did his father have to do with anything, who or what was this voice, and how did he know his father?

"I'm right you know. You were never meant to be a family man. You belong on the battlefield, bathing in the blood of your enemies," the voice said. "Only there can you find your sense of... 'peace' that you desire so badly."

The voice that spoke was deep and commanding. It sounded like it was everywhere at once but there wasn't a soul in Marcus's vicinity and this was troublesome. Not knowing where a possible attack could come from introduced too many variables for Marcus to be able to deal with.

To make matters worse, Marcus hadn't even noticed the fact that he was now on his knees gasping for air. He was so focused and enthralled by the voice that his mind hadn't even registered his body's current state.

"Hmmm.. you're not Liam? He isn't so weak that he'd falter at the sound of my voice."

The voice stopped speaking for a moment to observe Marcus more closely

"Who are you?"

There was a slightly more threatening tone to the voice now. Marcus had never felt so afraid in his life.

He felt like he was an ant standing before a lion who only would need to step on him one good time before going on about their day.

It only took the voice a few seconds to understand the situation and draw a conclusion.

"Ahh.. I see now. You are his offspring," the voice proclaimed in a less enthused tone of voice. "Looks like he went ahead and somehow managed to tie the knot with that cold-hearted woman."

Suddenly the pressure in the darkness lessened considerably. Marcus was relieved and was now able to stand up more carefully listen to what the voice was saying.

When he heard the voice mention the cold-hearted woman though he was confused. Could this voice be referring to his mother.

"A shame you won't live long."

To these words, Marcus paused. What did the voice mean he wouldn't live long and how would he know this.

Marcus tried to speak but when he did try he realized he couldn't. It was like the words he wanted to say were there but he couldn't vocalize them and they remained as thoughts.

"I really don't understand why it is he brought you to me. Every time I bestow 'TERRA' to one of my followers they are hunted down and ruthlessly killed," said the voice. "Maybe he believes you will be different; that stubborn idiot never did know when to throw in the towel."

"He is a fool," said the voice. "Hopefully he will not regret this decision."

And with that statement, Marcus fainted.

He never got to find out who or what the voice speaking to him was. Nor did he understand what series of events led up to this. He could only hope his father would be able to find him in this darkness and maybe explain to him what happened.
