Silence

The room got quiet.

Too quiet for Mike's liking.

An odd silence was heard through the hall. Almost every conversation that was taking place in the building ceased to exist. The two workers seemed slightly puzzled and concerned. Mike could tell that they wanted to say something but neither of them seemed confident enough to ask. The stillness of the situation reminded him of the ambiance he first felt when he entered the elevator. To avoid making the situation any more awkward Mike decided to speak up.

"Nevermind, I just saw a post about them going extinct earlier, I was wondering if you guys saw that too. It was trending on my web chat. I didn't expect it was such a hard topic?"This was obviously a lie that he had come up with but the others seemed to have bought it despite Mike not mentioning the stranger again.

It was Jack who responded first "Oh. I see, Sorry I thought... Nevermind." Jack seemed to be questioning what to say next. It was clearly obvious they were lying to him but Mike didn't understand why. Did the moths mean something? Were they a danger to Mike? He certainly didn't feel threatened when he met them earlier. Ophelia's voice cut through the awkward silence that was approaching again

"Oh! wait. We still need to show you to your desk! Nearly forgot. That's what Jack gets paid for anyway. He is specifically a guide who deals with the logistics of the company." She gave a slight smirk to Jack as she continued to speak. " Let's not get him fired. He's very important to the company!" She laughed and started to walk on. It seemed as though most of the workers had also gone back to doing their normal jobs after Ophelia's speech. Mike could tell that this whole conversation was just a diversion for him to try to forget about what he saw but he just couldn't. He knew it held importance and wanted to know exactly what it means. For now, he decided to play along with Ophelia's plan as she toured him around the office.

"As you can see, we are a very hard-working company. Killian's team is actually the hardest to get into, he only scouts the best talents. That means you are special newbie. congrats!" Mike didn't know if he should see this as an insult or a compliment so he decided to pick the latter and thank Ophelia for congratulating him." You know, Killian gives his team blazer colors based on how much authority they have." From what Mike knew there 4 different colors of blazers in the raids company. The green one was the most common, it represented the volunteer's business side of the company. The red blazer was given to the secretary, Mike only knew one secretary and he personally didn't want to meet another any time soon if they were anything like Jess. The gray blazer represented the non-awakened in the company they usually majored in computer science and have vast knowledge about what was happening in the world at the moment. They were like the personal news channel for the company. Finally, the company had blue blazers. These were handed out to the strongest raiders in the company. They had to prove to Killian that they could be trusted under any circumstance. It was without a doubt the hardest blazer to receive but also the greatest honor to the company. Ophelia decided to continue with her mini-rant. "Killian obviously has all of them, he just switches between the ones that look the best, he usually wears the blue one though. Some speculate that it might be because his lover's favorite color was blue, but others just say he likes the color blue" Ophelia paused for a second to catch her breath and continued on with her story. " I personally know that none of those are true. "

"Why? Are you close?" Mike asked out of curiosity.

She started laughing uncontrollably. "Oh please! That guy has no friends! He's as cold as a brick." Ophelia was about to say something else until Jack stopped her

"Ophelia, this is the second time today I had to warn you about talking about Killian in a negative way. Are you trying to get fired before me or something?" He responded in a sarcastic tone, similar to the one Ophelia gave him earlier. "You were so busy slandering Killian that you haven't even noticed that we have arrived at Mike's future desk," Jack responded mocking Ophelia.

"Oh." She started to hang her head in shame. She scratched her head as she tried to come up with something else to say. Instead, she quickly apologizes and leaves the area quickly.

He sighed and continued speaking. " Please ignore her, she's usually like that. Im going to let you get acquainted with the office now. If you need anything feel free to call my private number." Jack extended his hand toward Mike and handed him a dark business card. It had his number and full name written on it.

"Thank you, this helps a lot" Mike responded enthusiastically. It was the first time he felt as though he had made friends in the office.

The last words Jack said was " You are very welcome" as he started to walk away in a sophisticated manner.

Mike looked around his new office, it was quite spacious. The office contained an abundance of papers and office supplies that would probably prove useful in the future. His chair was quite comfortable too. Not too luxurious but also not too useless, basically a normal high-back leather chair. On the shelf next to his computer there was a white inkjet printer that looked almost brand new. Mike wondered if the office was tailored specifically for him or if it was just a room they had used for storage. One shelf has literature and the other side has guidebooks and rules on how to behave in the raid department. One specifically stood out to Mike, it was titled "HOW TO SURVIVE AS A RUIN'S RAIDER." Mike hadn't felt this happy and complete in a while. Compared to his house, which was slowly disintegrating, his office was like a miracle. He finally started to chill in his chair as he decided to read the book which had caught his attention.

"HOW TO SURVIVE AS A RUIN'S RAIDER" Was a large book with detailed instructions on how to survive on the field. It gave step-by-step instructions for martial artists, humans,Mage's, Transformers, necromancers, vampires, and werewolves. Heck. Mike didn't think the book missed any race at all. When you awaken as C+ or above raider, you are given special classes that you can pick between. They usually are limited based on your own set of capabilities though. For example, if you used a sword and were more fitted to be a martial artist the class Mage would not show up on your selection tree. No researcher has ever been able to figure out how exactly this phenomenon came to be but personally, Mike thought it was more impressive for the system to analyze your personality to give you a more personalized class. Funnily enough, the most popular classes would range between mages and martial artists. I guess that's not that uncommon when most books major in those categories.

Mike flipped to the page labeled Human and Non-awakened. By reading the first page, he could tell just how much effort went into this book, it was truly remarkable. It would not shock him if it was revealed that the book actually originated from a ruin as everyone knew ruins held items with very important historical information. When he was sure he had read enough he put the book down. It was at this moment Mike noticed the commotion outside.
