Chapter 30: No One Must Know My Identity

"As long as the diagnosis is right, we'll be able to get the best cure for her sickness."

"That's why we need to get Dr Janice as soon as possible, otherwise…" Silence settled in on his words. He walked back towards his seat, but before getting to his seat, turned to look at Shawn and continued in a grave voice, "otherwise, your Nana may not be able to survive till the end of this year."

Shawn bowed his head, wringing his hands through his hair, "She is still not replying to my emails. I don't know what else to do."

He stood up from his seat and started pacing around the room. He couldn't focus on anything. The fear that one day he'll be called that his grandmother was no more has been like a cloud hovering over his head, casting a shadow over everything else in his life.

"If only I can see her, I don't mind kidnapping her and forcing her to treat Nana, but I don't even know where she is." He was totally clueless on how to deal with the situation.

His grandmother's case was the second situation after Kathleen's disappearance that had left him in such a condition where he felt useless despite his wealth and connections.

"Why is it so difficult to get this woman? She's just as evasive and difficult as Kathleen."

"Kathleen? Who's Kathleen? Steffan probed.

'Why am I even comparing the two?' thought Shawn. They are two different individuals that were not related in any way. But they sure do have one thing in common though; they're both bent on making my life hard and miserable.

"No one that you know." Shawn responded, snapping out of his thoughts and drawing a veil over his emotions.

"Pull yourself together, Buddy. I'll talk with some of my contacts to see if we can track her current location."

"I believe a one on one with her will yield a better result since the mailing route is taking so much time. Whenever I get any information about her, I'll pass it on to you without delay," comforted Steffan.

"Thanks Steffan." Shawn replied listlessly.

There was a knock on the door and a nurse dashed in. "Dr Steffan, the patient in ward five is having an attack again."

"I'll have to go Shawn." Picking his stethoscope, he hurried out. "I'll check on your grandmother when I'm less busy, and please shut the door after you," he added over his shoulders.

"Go ahead." Shawn said and also strolled out of the office.

Shawn was on his way to his grandmother's ward when he saw a familiar figure, accompanied by a doctor disappearing into the emergency ward.

'Is that not Kathleen? What could she possibly be doing here in the hospital? And who is she going to see in the emergency ward?'

He quickened his pace, going after her.

Led by the doctor, Kathleen entered the ward and was taken to a bed where a man who had tubes connected to different parts of his body lay.

The heart monitoring machine was beeping rhythmically by the side.

Although most of his face was covered in bandages, Kathleen was still able to recognize him as the man who shot at her.

"Any information about him, doctor?"

"No, he was already in this state when he was brought in and we didn't find any ID or means of identification on him."

"Not even a driver's license? I bet he was prepared and didn't want to leave any clue. Has no one come forward yet? Say, a family member, friend or something to identify him or make any report?"

The doctor shook his head.

Kathleen's tilted head bobbed up and down, her lips tightly pressed together. "I'll need you to do me a favor, doctor."

"With all pleasure Doctor, but what could that be?"

The Chief consultant of the hospital was yet to recover from the shock of finding out that the young gorgeous lady standing beside him was actually Dr Janice.

When she walked into his office this afternoon asking about a particular accident victim and also requesting to be in charge of his treatment, he was nonplussed.

Luckily by his training, he was as polite as ever and curiously asked her the reason behind her request. He would have been a goner after finding out about her identity if he had behaved otherwise.

Very few people have the good fortune of meeting Dr Janice in person. She preferred being low key and her identity has always been kept a secret.

"First, no one must know my identity, and that I was here." Kathleen instructed, and checked the IV fluid.

"Secondly, I want you to keep a close eye on him." She continued, her eyes still on the IV.

After calculating the drip rate, she knew it should be finished in an hour. By then, it should be safe to move him.

"I need him to be transferred to another ward with tight security. He tried to kill someone but got involved in an accident, but for now, I don't want to involve the police. So everything must be kept secret. His whereabouts, progress and whoever is attending to him must be someone that can be trusted."

"Can you do that for me?" Kathleen's slender brow arched in expectation.

"Of course, even if you didn't ask. For the mere fact that he is a criminal, I would have done that."

"Attempted murder," Kathleen corrected, giving the doctor a gentle pat on the back while heading to the door.

"Do you mind if I ask you something?" The doctor scratched his head, with an awkward expression.

Shawn arrived at the door of the emergency room and opened the door after waiting for a few seconds.

Kathleen, who had just looked backwards to hear what the doctor had to ask, bumped into a strong wall the moment she turned towards the door.

"Ouch! Why aren't you paying attention to where you're going? She looked up to see a tall figure hovering over her.
