"What can I do?" Beatrice asked, her eyes filled with doubt. Her hands shook seeing the gigantic man wearing uniform on the ground.

What can a mere woman do against a man in power?

The sheriff was squirming on the ground and yet he didn't give up. Beatrice heard him mumbling cusses. He was planning on killing them all.

Naomi had joined Marcella and helped the battered Debby inside the house. "We should help her first. I'm calling the Commissioner," Marcella said. 

Beatrice heard her. She saw Marcella handing over Debby to Naomi and looking into her purse. Something dawned on her.
