Chapter 12: Revelations at the Palace
Emperor Shen, an imposing figure with a flowing silver beard and regal bearing, regarded Li Xue and Lanfen with a mixture of curiosity and wariness. As they approached the throne, they bowed respectfully, following the lead of the courtiers around them.
"Emperor Shen," the lead guard began, "we have brought before you a stranger who claims to be from another world. She and her companion were found exploring our kingdom."
The Emperor studied Li Xue intently, his gaze piercing but not unkind. "Is this true, young one? You are not from our realm?"
Li Xue took a deep breath and met the Emperor's eyes. "Yes, Your Majesty. My name is Li Xue, and I come from a world far different from this one. I arrived here through a mysterious artifact that I discovered in my world. I mean no harm to your kingdom. I am simply trying to understand my new surroundings and learn about the mermaid world."
Emperor Shen stroked his beard thoughtfully before replying. "I see. It is not often that we encounter beings from other realms. Your presence here is both intriguing and concerning. However, I sense no ill intent in your words. Tell me, Li Xue, have you noticed anything... unusual about yourself since your arrival?"
Li Xue hesitated, unsure of how to respond. "Well, Your Majesty, I have found myself able to understand and communicate with the various sea creatures that inhabit your world. And my swimming skills have improved rapidly under the guidance of my friend Lanfen. But beyond that, I am still adjusting to my new life as a mermaid."
The Emperor nodded slowly, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Very well. I have one more question for you, Li Xue. Do you know the significance of this?" He gestured toward a symbol on Li Xue's mermaid tail, a mark she had not noticed before.
Li Xue looked at the symbol, puzzled. "I don't know, Your Majesty. I've never seen it before."
Emperor Shen's eyes widened with surprise, and his voice took on a tone of solemnity. "Li Xue, that mark is the emblem of the royal family. It appears that you are not just any mermaid. You are my daughter."
A wave of shock washed over Li Xue, leaving her speechless. She struggled to comprehend the enormity of the revelation, her mind racing with questions and confusion. As the reality of her new identity began to sink in, Li Xue knew that her journey in the mermaid world was about to take a dramatic and unexpected turn.
