Chapter 28: [Bonus chapter] She Was Doing It On Purpose
"You don't know? "I still have a loan to pay." Since the novel is set in a fantasy world, all old things are still used including this carriage!
If she would have the right investment, she could start many businesses with her knowledge of the real world and be the richest woman here.
"And I cannot always count on you. I have to earn for myself. If you will invest in me I will return the money later with a high interest!" she offered with a sly smile on her face when Alec blinked and stared at her.
"Like you have returned those five gold coins you brought for your marriage!" he titled his head and said with a half smile on his face.
He was mocking her for being a fool! Even if she would tell him that it was not her, he was not going to believe her.
"That was different. I was in love with him. But now I know you can only depend on money and yourself." She puffed up her cheeks as she looked back at him.
"If I am working for you, it is only my right to get a salary." She looked back at him defiantly and he nodded, surprising her. She had already gathered many arguments in her heart to convince him, but he agreed immediately!
"My lady, I will earn a lot for you in the future too." Alec, who felt that Cassian was taking all the attention, could not help but assure the woman, "and then give you all the money so you can live a good life."
Mary looked at the young child who looked like a fluffy bunny with those cute eyes and a worried look on his face that made her heart melt. A bright smile formed on her lips as she squished his cheeks.
"Yes, yes! My Alec is the best!" She kissed his cheeks and then laughed at the sight of his flushed face.
Cassian's eyes cracked. Surprise would be a small word to express his emotions. She was treating his son as her plush toy but even if he would complain, Alec was not willing to listen to him.
It was this woman he was going to follow. She wanted his son to work hard so that she could have a better life. Very well! He would show her what a better life would be like.
"My Lord, we are already in the plaza. Where would you like us to stop?" asked the knight who followed the carriage from behind.
Mary opened the curtains and looked around when Alec followed her. It was their first time in the market as they looked at each other with amazement.
"We will stop here and wander a bit. You do not need to follow us. You can rest in an inn." The door was opened and he walked out and extended his hands.
Alec who was behind him paused, but Mary gently pushed him forward. Alec was a bit embarrassed but he took Cassian's hands and walked out when Cassian's face softened.
He took the child in his arms instead of letting go of them once they were out.
"The place is vast. It would be better to hold you so you could be with the lady. Otherwise, you will not be able to catch up with your tiny legs." He remarked when Alec tried to wiggle from his arms.
Mary looked at Cassian astounded but still nodded her head when he passed a sharp glare at her.
"Yes, it would be better this way since I will not be able to carry you for long." Poor Alec had no choice.
He did not want to tire the lady so he rested in the arms of his father but only after shooting a few glares at him.
They passed through many shops selling clothes and jewelry. Some sweet shops and inns.
Mary kept staring at the whole scene like a child who was brought out for the first time. Her eyes were filled with curiosity and rare innocence.
She paused in front of a small stall of hair clips and marveled at their designs and quality.
"My lady, you have an excellent eye. These clips are made from rare magic stones and most of them are not less than artifacts. It has a protection spell on them," said the seller as she picked up a red stone hair clip that was cut in the shape of a crescent moon in red color.
But Mary shook her head and walked away. She did it a few more times while stopping at the shops of clothes, accessories, small bags and store boxes and then shoes.
"If only I had money!" Cassian heard Alec whisper in a defeated voice and his chest tightened. This woman!
She said that they were here to choose a gift for the child. However, she was staring at everything for her with such a face that his child felt sorry for her.
Forget it! He would be kind and help her so that Alec would realize that he was not that cold-hearted.
"If you want anything, you can buy it immediately. Do not worry about the price, I will pay for it." His words brought the seller's attention and she picked up the most expensive shoes from the display and showed them to the girl. However, Mary still shook her head and walked away without buying anything, making Cassian frown.
He was kind enough to take the first step, yet the girl snubbed him! It had never happened to him before..
"Your highness, as I said, if you want to pay me, give me cash! I do not need those things since I already have a lot of clothes and other accessories thanks to you." she said softly when he gritted his teeth.
"Then why were you looking at them, my lady? You looked dazed while touching them," asked Alec softly. He was sure that the cold and brutal face of Cassian must have scared the kind woman as he resented his father more and more.
"Ah! That is a secret."
