Chapter 17: I Don't Want To Be Your Child

The maid felt pity for the child.

"Alright, I can take you to his office, but it depends on him whether he allows you to meet him or not." she warned but he nodded readily and held her hands tightly as she sighed and took him to the duke's office.

By now, he was already aware of the way and more comfortable reaching out to him. Even the knight did not stop them since he knew the lady and child were allowed in the office anytime.

He nodded and let the child enter the office. Alec was afraid but determined to face Cassian. So he walked in slowly but determinedly.

"Yes, you can enter." He heard the cold voice and walked in.

Cassian was standing in front of the balcony railing with a glass of wine in his hands. His face had a desolate look as if he was part of the dark night filled with darkness and solitude that made Alec take a step back.

"What is it?" he asked with a tilt of his head. His voice was devoid of warmth and assurance that would make the child feel better.

"I heard that I am assumed to be your child?" Alec asked in a soft voice as he raised his head and looked at the narrowed eyes of the man whose face turned cold for some reason.

"I wanted to tell you that I am not your son! I can not be!" His voice was trembling with fear but he held his shirt tightly as he faced the scary person.

"I am sure I was born in an orphanage and the director told me my parents left me there because they did not need me. How could the son of a rich man like you be born in an orphanage in a remote area?

It was only recently that I was transferred here. So you do not need to investigate me. You can throw me and the lady out for deceiving you." Cassian raised a brow. It did not take any effort to know that the child was afraid of him and wanted to leave the place with the woman.

"Are you sure that you have taken birth in a different orphanage than here?" Cassian did not pay attention to anything else except what he deemed important but Alec thought he was trying to confirm his words. So, he nodded his head again and again.

"Yes, I am sure of it. I have spent all my life in the town of Lithium. I was recently sent here because that orphanage closed down. I do not belong to this land."

"....." "I did not understand why you needed to travel to Litenium for prayers. There are so many churches in the northern empire too!" Seriana gave a helpless smile as she ran a hand in Cassian's hair and touched his forehead with hers.

"You know it is a ritual. The land of Lithium is the holy land where I need to pray for our child's healthy birth. It was already delayed a lot. I did not want our child to suffer God's wrath because of your possessiveness. I need to leave, Cas!" the man sighed as he felt he was defeated in the argument as he huffed.

"Haiz! If that is the case, I will come with you." He demanded but the woman just laughed.

"Do you believe in gods? Would you even pray?" she asked with a raised brow when the man huffed and looked away.

Serina gave a helpless shake of her head as she cupped his cheeks.

"Cas! I know you worry about me but my sister and your uncle accompany me. They want to pray for their child too. You do not need to worry, I will be back before your meeting ends and then we will spend time shopping together.

"We will buy a lot of things for the baby and we still need to buy a cradle for him." Her words melted his heart as he sighed and pulled his wife into a hug.

"But Lithium is too far. I am afraid that it would take longer than you promise." he sighed as he rubbed the back of Serina…..

"Lithium is so far. I am sure the Lord had never visited that place. How could I be your son if I was born there? " The voice of the child brought Cassian back to the present and he looked at the child with a trembling gaze.

"Are you sure you took birth there?" he asked again, making the child frown.

"Do you think that I would be lying? I have no interest in being your son and living here. I want to live a peaceful life with the lady and I am already leaving this instant. You do not need to treat us with good food or clothes. I am not your son." For some reason, Cassian felt with his late wife when the child frowned.

Their expressions and words matched so perfectly that his head and heart hurt.

"Get back to your room." He demanded in a cold and loud voice. The child paused and looked at Cassian in confusion but Cassian turned and looked out of the balcony.

"The investigation had not ended yet and I will not reach any conclusion until I see the proof myself, so it would be better that you wait in your room till then." He finally calmed down and spoke in a soft voice but that was not enough for the child who looked betrayed.

"But… I did not want to claim the position of your son." he repeated but it only made Cassian frown again.

"That is not something you can decide on your own, child. It would be better that you wait for the truth to come."
