It had been two days since Count Bernarnt de Baux had ordered the army to split in two, sending one-quarter of the total troops back to Potenza to keep the citizenry in check. He understood that if the city were to revolt and join the rebel army, the army would be in a precarious position, as it would be in enemy territory and potentially cut off from its supply lines.

This could even allow the rebel army, which was small in numbers, to successfully attack smaller foraging groups and potentially cause heavy casualties not by steel but by hunger, potentially even defeating the entire Provencal-French army without even engaging them in a proper battle, as the lack of food would do its part in that.
