If Eric was able to succeed thanks to them then he would be very grateful so he would be sure to treat them to something as a way of thanking them.

He already had thoughts that perhaps if the person was trustworthy enough then he could take them in as a subordinate.

The moment that he rose up in the rankings of the gang was when he needed to establish his place and one way to do that was to have people working directly under him.

While it would be good to have people beneath him who were previously above him, he still needed those he could rely on who were less likely to stab him in the back later.
