I had always imagined a perfect world where our parents would stand up for us, their children, where they would defend us and protect us from harm…where they would listen to our side of the story before judging us for what we did, or didn’t do.

But in this cruel world, my parents were horrified at what I had done to their beloved ‘to-be’ son-in-law; worried about Rick’s well being more than Kia’s as they tried to help that filthy bastard stand.

I took a step forward, to make sure that the bastard stayed down for good, but my dad shot a hand out to keep me away. “Back off, Kai,” he growled, and I felt my heart shatter a thousand times over, before hardening again, my fists along with it.

“Stop spewing nonsense; you don't know the whole story, Kai,” my mother argued, her eyes wide, her body tense as she stood protectively over the scheming bastard. “You don't know anything!”
