Chapter 9: The Result of the First Hunt
I smile a little and hug Tsukuyo back. After a few seconds, I released her and said,
"So, what should we do with this?"
Before she can say something, master Utsushi appears next to us and says,
"Congratulations! That is a perfect hunt!"
"Thank you, master Utsushi."
"Thank you~."
He nods and takes out something from his pocket. It was a bamboo tube with a small rope dangling from the bottom of the tube. Master Utsushi pulls the rope, and a firework comes out of the tube.
"Now we wait."
After waiting for a few minutes, I can see a group of Palicoes running toward us with a wooden cart.
"Meowster Utsushi! We have arrived!"
"Good work! Let's take the corpses to the ship!"
"Yes!"
I see the ten Palicoes taking carrying the massive beast and putting it on the cart. After tying it to the cart, we follow them back to the ship.
While walking back to our ship, Master Utsushi looked at us and said,
"Anyway, Good job on your first hunt, Terry, Tsukuyo. Are you two ready for your score?"
"Yes!"
"Yes~"
He nods and says.
"You two have a perfect score! Your teamwork is flawless. You stay with the plan you made and execute it flawlessly. Not only that, but you two also trust each other. Tsukuyo follows Terry's command, and Terry ensures to covers Tsukuyo's back. Ten out of ten, perfect."
I nod and smile at his praise.
"With more hunting and training, you two will be a hunter in no time."
We continue to walk back to our ship and arrive after ten minutes of walking. When we are on the ship, Master Utsushi smiles and says,
"Come on! I will teach you how to skin and butcher the monster you get. Take out your knife. Great Izuchi is a Bird Wyvern. It did not have any scale and only had thick fur and hide. A sharp knife is good enough. Watch."
Master Utsushi pushes his knife underneath the Great Izuchi's neck, making a clean cut to its tail base.
"After making this cut, you must slowly cut open the skin. When you reach the legs, you can cut the hide around this area. The legs did not have a good hide, but the claw was valuable enough for weapon creation."
I nod and see him turn the Great Izuchi around and cut the rest of the hides open.
"As for the neck and the head, you can stop it here. You can feel the joint around here. Push your knife and make a circular cut around this part. With that, you have a clean hide and fur. Great Izuchi's head has a lot of material for weapon and armor creations. However, what makes the head even more valuable is the eyes. That is the main ingredient to make potions."
"Wait. The main ingredient for the potion is the eyes?"
"Yes. There are a couple of substitutes for the eyes, but Great Izuchi's eyes are the most potent ingredient. Anyway! As for the meat, you can bring them back whole to the village, where the butcher will do it for you. They are the ones who know which meat can be eaten and which one is not. You can do it yourself when you learn how to correctly butcher the monster meat from one of our local butchers."
Tsukuyo and I nod our heads. When the demonstration is over, one of the Palicoes walks toward Master Utsushi and says,
"Meowster! We are ready to set sail!"
"Good! Let's get back home!"
"Yes!"
~A couple of hours later~
When we get back home, the people are cheering our names. It is as if we are their hero or something. I can see Tsukuyo smile brightly at the people who are cheering for her. I wave a little at a group of children cheering for me.
"Is it always like this?"
Master Utsushi smiles at my question and says.
"Kamura Village is unique, Terry. In the capital, hunting is a job. In this village, a hunter is a defender that protects this village. Hunters have a low-level life expectancy than any other job. In the capital, if a hunter dies, it is not much because they have a large population. In here? A hunter dying means that we lose family, and the chance of the village going down gets bigger."
"Why not ask the capital to send a reinforcement?"
"We already ask for help, but because of a large number of monsters in the past decade, the kingdom cannot send help. You should know this; you are from the capital, right?"
"They never say anything about it. They only say something about a fast hunting program."
"Fast Hunting Program? Is that what I think it means?"
"Yeah, faster hunter teaching. They want to have as many hunters as possible."
"That bad, huh?"
Of course, that is bullshit. I don't know the reason why I said that. Is this the power of Communication Talent? Or is it a combination of this perk and the other? I hope that it will not bite me in the ass later.
"Anyway, all hunters are family in this village. As long as you respect the people, they will honor your hard work with all they have."
"Don't be an asshole, get it."
"Ha! Pretty much."
I look to the side and see Tsukuyo nodding, agreeing with my words. Huh. It looks like she is listening to our conversation.
"Come on. We should give the meat to the butcher."
I nod and walk to the marketplace, where we arrive in front of a building. When we enter, Master Utsushi greets an older man holding a butcher knife.
"Yoshinake."
"Hmmm? Utsushi! What can I do for ya?"
Master Utsushi did not say a word and pointed at the corpse of the Great Izuchi.
"Oh! Great Izuchi! First hunt, huh? Good! We need more hunters around here. Because of the increasing number of Monster Outbreaks, we need as many hunters as possible. Anyway, bring it here."
We follow the butcher, Yoshinake, to the back of the room. We arrive in front of a massive stone table, and the Palicoes put the corpse on that table.
"Smooth skinning as always, Utsushi. Give me a few minutes, and you will have Great Izuchi's meat you can eat or sell."
"Make sure to divide them into two."
"Of course. Leave it to me."
We waited for a few minutes outside the room. After waiting for a few minutes, the butcher walks out with two big bags that I assume are filled with meat.
"Here you go. If you want to sell them, I will buy them from you. I already took my share, by the way."
I want to ask him if he cheated on us, but seeing that Master Utsushi did not say anything, I know I can trust him. At least I know that he did not cheat on us too much.
Tsukuyo looks at the bag for a second and says,
"Sure! How much?"
"Each bag is worth ten thousand Zenny."
"Deal!"
I look at my bag and say.
"Can I take a kilo of them and sell the rest? I want to try to cook them."
"Oh? You know how to cook, huh? Sure. I will even give you the original price. Do you want me to give you the best piece of meat?"
"Please."
He takes out a small pouch and takes a couple of big chunks out of the bigger bag, and then places them inside the pouch.
"I usually roast them with salt and pepper. It is tender and has a delicious meaty flavor."
"Gocha, thanks."
"No. Thank you for taking care of the monster for us."
We walk away from the butcher, and while walking, I look at Tsukuyo and Master Utsushi.
"Do you guys want to come and eat lunch at my home? I will make something delicious with this meat."
"Oh yes! I will come! I will even bring my secret stash of sake that I keep when I reach seventeen!"
Master Utsushi nods and says.
"I will come. Can I bring my partner with me?"
"Of course, Master Utsushi. I will cook for all of us."
"Thank you."
After saying that, the three of us separated, and I arrived at my house.
"Home sweet home."
