Chapter 11: 10: The Jörmungandr

[Chapter 10: The Jörmungandr]

'How the hell did Odin think that this was a good idea!' screamed Loki in his mind, looking at the giant in front of him.

It was so big, he thought it was a mountain!

Loki massaged his temple and tried to think about how he could steal its egg. The Jörmungandr's egg was probably near it, may be encircled by the giant snake. Its eyelids were closed, and its breathing pattern was slow and regular, meaning that it was probably asleep—or so hoped Loki.

But this did not in any way reassure him. He could feel the gusts of wind as the snake breathed out.

'What the hell did I get myself into?' he thought as if depressed, but his lips slowly curled up. His eyes widened, and he looked at the snake with a strange glint. It, however, soon vanished as the breath of the snake broke the thick trunk of a tree.

Loki knew he couldn't carelessly approach the snake, as it would easily sense him. He could feel it in the air, a presence surrounding the forest and the snake's den.

To take the egg, he would need a distraction.

But what? A small illusion of himself wouldn't distract it, only make it blow it away like a bug. And a big enough would easily be found out as something not real, and wouldn't wake it up.

He could not take his time to charge up a big spell, as the snake would sense him while casting.

He could also not conceal himself as a snake or any other animal. The snake would sense the difference.

And even if he got anyway near the snake, he had no idea how to take the egg away, if it was encircled by the serpent's body.

'What an impossible situation,' thought Loki, his eyes glancing all around, trying to figure out a way to pass through the defense of the snake.

After a few minutes of him observing the Jörmungandr, Loki closed his eyes and began feeling his magic. He rotated it around his body, acting like a shield.

Suddenly, feeling the magic, the serpent opened his crimson eyes and looked at Loki as if he were a bug.

A snort escaped its nostrils before it raised its head and roared as if it were a lion. A gigantic wave of wind followed its roar, destroying a good part of the forest where Loki stood.

Loki's magic fought against the gust of wind and won but with difficulty. He stood alone in front of a devastated landscape.

The Jörmungandr looked at Loki with a hint of surprise. But before Loki could relax, the serpent spat at him.

Loki waved his hand toward the air, lifting a chunk of the earth to act as a shield against the poisonous spit. The poison was so potent that the earth disintegrated.

With rage, the Jörmungandr slid toward Loki, escaping from his encircling position and destroying the landscape.

The Jörmungandr opened its mouth in front of Loki and went to bite him. Loki snapped his finger, creating a tornado of snow that shortly disoriented the snake and permitted Loki to vanish away.

The snake smiled seeing how Loki had to dodge when they were easier ways and raised itself in the air. Its grin became ever wider, and from its mouth escaped an entire sea of poison.

It quickly spread, corroding the earth itself and creating a large fog of smoke. In the fog, the snake saw Loki's body quickly turning crisp and turning into ashes.

Thinking that it had won, the snake retreated toward his den. But in truth, an invisible Loki was flying toward that place. Loki had read as many books as he could about Jörmungandrs before going and in one of them, it talked about a powerful alien who fought one.

The alien said that at some point in time when the snake was really annoyed with his presence, he let out a vast amount of poison on the ground. So, Loki decided to trick it into thinking he could not fly, making the Jörmungandr believe that he died.

He also used a small illusion to make it as if his body had perished, but he knew that the snake would soon realize that something was wrong.

Loki did however not expect that the snake would realize this soon. Another roar left the snake's mouth sweeping what was left untouched of the horizon. Now, in the vast forest, almost nothing stayed alive except for an egg.

'Shit! Faster!' screamed Loki in his mind. Two small tornados of air manifested behind his feet, boosting him to greater speed. But the snake was still behind him! Loki could feel its putrid breath.

The snake could not see Loki, but it could sense him. It spat various deadly poisons at the god who continued to dodge them, unable to defend himself.

During all that fight, Loki never was on the offensive, for he stood absolutely no chance. The strongest point of the Jörmungandr was its thick skin.

And now, Loki tried his first attack. He manifested a massive spear that quickly pierced the air and aimed at the Jormungandr's eye.

The serpent just looked at it, unbothered. And as the spear hit the eye of the Jormungandr, its weak point,

It did absolutely nothing!

The serpent snorted, what did this puny god think this was going to do?

Loki's face lost color, this was bad. Really bad! The snake was playing with him,

Arrogance at its finest.

No, actually, this was good!

He was going to teach it a lesson,

Don't play with your enemy if you have something to lose.

Loki used one last spell. That would probably empty his reserves. A tsunami of wind pushed him toward the egg.

The serpent smirked. So, what if that weak god neared her egg? He could not escape. The god had no strength left to cast a spell, nor could he move.

The bones of his body were fractured because of the impact! The god even spat blood. His whole body was covered with dirt.

The snake looked at him, her smile ever-present. Slowly she approached him. Her lacerated teeth looked menacing and shining with the light of the sun. Poisonous drool fell from her mouth.

What a delicious meal it would be!

If only suddenly her instinct screamed at her to move. A multicolored beam pierced the sky and teleported Loki away.

"Loki!" The young Asgardian heard voices screaming at him with distress. His sigh was blurry, but he could perceive the shining blond hair of his brother and the blurry face of his mother.

Loki smiled, spitting even more blood, and held the egg high in the air. "I did it" he muttered, before falling into Nótt's rough but peaceful hands.

His hands could, however, not hold the weight of the egg, and it fell to the ground. A crack spread itself on it.

A.N: IDK why but I felt the two last chapter much harder to make, everytime I read it, I femt that it was really bad.

I could have make this confrontation longer, but I didn't want to beat around the bush.
