They had a tactic just for this scenario.
Cael maneuvered between Ginevra and Enzo, taking the brunt of the attack. He was slower with his spells than Ginevra, lacking the practice that was needed to cast them wordlessly, but he still could deflect a Fireball or two with Arcane Arrows.
He could also throw an Arcane Arrow at Enzo, distracting him for a moment, even if that cost Cael a Fireball that exploded too close to his feet. But Cael's Second Skin absorbed the damage—and shattered.
He only needed to give Ginevra time, and he did. Cael heard her chanting the spell behind him, even with the explosions ringing in his ears, and heard when she finished.
A large, smooth wall of ice rose from the ground. Cael dashed behind it to stand next to Ginevra, not a moment too late. The next second, it was shaken by yet another explosion.
