Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Atalanta took my hand in hers holding it as she walked towards the gate. I quickly followed along, the dagger that she had earlier given me was held tight in my hands.

It was a point of comfort for me just as was the warmth of her hand in mine.

The time passed by quickly as we approached the gate, there were numerous people that seemed like they were both entering and exiting.

Seeing as there was already a line for people entering Atalanta pulled me with her to that line, waiting patiently.

The sun had already fallen to its halfway point by the time that we had made it to the front of the line, signaling the coming of noon.

I had noticed that while we were waiting online that there were certain people that were allowed to freely exit and enter the city.

Though whenever we saw one of them Atalanta's grip on my hand tightened a bit, her hand pulling me closer to her.

"Purpose?" A voice broke me out of my thoughts as the guard that was standing at the gate addressed us.

His lazy eyes that seemed to glaze over every time he had been forced to say that same question instantly perked up as he took in Atalanta.

It seemed that Atalanta had noticed this before I had, the grip that she had on my hand tightened as she glared down at the guard.

He immediately backtracked his eyes trying to look anywhere but Atalanta as he just let us in.

As we walked down the one road that seemed to go on forever Atalanta had established some connection as I could hear her voice echoing in my head despite her mouth not moving at all.

'We will register ourselves at the guild as adventurers'

I tried my hardest to reply back, my eyeborws scrunching in concentration as I tried to convey my acceptance.

However judging by the small peak of laughter that tingled in my ears I knew that it was unsuccessful.

A huge tower, one that seemed to go up and up into the sky, never ending.

That was the guild and where Atalanta had taken me. Inside I could hear the ruckus that was hundreds of these supposed adventures talking and talking my ears twitching this way and that as I tried to tune the noise out.

However when I reached up to cover my ears I noticed something, the ears that I had expected were not ears, they were animal ears just as Atalanta had.

My eyes opened wide in panic as I looked behind me and just as I had dreaded a tail was hidden between my legs, it's current position reflecting my emotions.

It was green and a sandy blonde just like how Atalanta's was.

Speaking of her, Atalanta had noticed my panic and wss shushing me into her chest, her hands petting my new ears.

I couldn't help a small purr that escaped my mouth as she let them, my eyes glazed over at the feeling and my eyes closed enjoying the warmth that she had given to me.

"Ohh… who is this little one, is she your daughter?" I heard a voice sound out breaking me from the comfortable warmth that I had been reveling in.

A glare was sent out to the woman that was cooing at me.

However that seemed to just spur whoever that was on as she just cooed even harder, even trying to reach over and touch me.

Though before the hand could touch me it was taken hold of by Atalanta.

"Do not touch him" a cold voice, one that I almost didn't recognize sternly warned the receptionist.

"Ah… s-sorry ma'am," she apologized.

"W- wait that's a boy!" She blurted out the sudden loud noise causing me to cover my ears.

Another glare and she looked suitably chastised.

"Ahem- I only meant that he was so pretty that I had assumed he was your daughter" she quickly backtracked not wanting to offend Atalanta.

A mischievous smile grew on my face as I realized that I could cause some trouble, I wasn't usually one to something like this but for some reason it felt right, causing trouble like this.

"Momma" I exclaimed with tears in my eyes, my hand pointing to the lady as my arms wrapped around Atalanta to pull my head into her chest.

"Why is she so mean?" I pouted, trying my hardest to flatten my ears and show my sadness.

Though the glint of mischievous in my eyes couldn't be hidden from Atalanta.

Though it seemed Atalanta was fine to play along, hardening her glare on the clerk and protectively holding me close.

"Wa- I- I didn't mean to" the clerk stuttered in response. "I- is there something I can do for you?" She seemed defeated, the panic finally giving way to professionalism, when she saw the hidden smirk I was giving her.

Atalanta too, had cracked a small smile.

"Yes, we just arrived and need to register as citizens, we were told to come to the guild for this"

"Ah… yes, just a moment let me grab the paperwork for you"

With that the clerk hurried to the back where she quickly grabbed some pieces of paper and what looked like an archaic pen, something that you would see in some historical movie.

I tried to look at the letters that made up the document but I wasn't familiar with them, it looked sort of like English and Japanese mixed together.

However it didn't seem like Atalanta had any problems reading it as she quickly filled in all the information that was needed, handing the papers back.

My eyes dropped again as time slowly passed by, our paper being processed while we waited outside the tower on some bench that we had found.

Eventually we were fetched by some low level employee that grabbed us and gave us a certificate so that we could live here.

Although we were officially allowed to rent or buy a house we had no money nor a place to stay.

The only option, it seemed, was to enter the dungeon where we could find magic stones which could be exchanged for valis.

I held Atalanta's hand in mine as we walked to the entrance of the dungeon.

Though we must have cut quite a figure as there were many adventurers staring at us or more like they were staring at me.

I had seen some adults that looked like children but all of them had human features which made it impossible for them to think of me as one of them.

That was even further removed from their mind as the resemblance between me and Atalanta was uncanny with my appearance looking like a slightly gender bent version of her.

However the stares soon disappeared as we descended into the dings on the adventurers tapering off as it was in the evening when most would be home or so I assumed.

From the way they were talked about it seemed more like a 9-5 and it was past five.

A flash of green light appeared in my vision as Atalanta' now appeared in her hands.

Arrows piercing the heads of the green creatures that had been charging at us.

Though there was one that she had left and it was rapidly approaching me.

I cautiously looked to Atalanta for help but her impassive face showed that she wanted me to do this on my own.

The only weapon I had in my hand was the dagger that she had handed me.

Though it seems that Atalanta wasn't going to leave me completely helpless as she handed me her bow, having me put away the dagger.

An arrow formed in her hand as she handed both to me.

A flash of a memory appeared in my mind as Atalanta's form when shooting her bow appeared in my mind.

Unconsciously my body mimicked the form and with a breath the arrow was let loose piercing the shoulder of the creature.

I reached for another arrow without thought but was soon brought out of my trance as I reached nothing.

Panic soon overcame me as both the blood all around me and the overwhelming feeling of fear reappeared.

I reached for anything but found nothing, not even Atalanta was near me. I reached for the dagger that she had given me in a desperate effort to survive but found nothing.

GOAAA

In the short time that I had let my eyes wander, the creature had snuck up on me and tackled me to the ground, the only thing saving me from death was the Atalanta's bow.

The creature kept trying to get past the bow but with strength I did not know I had I kept it at bay.

SHRRK

The sound of a dagger piercing flesh appeared in my ears as a massive amount of blood fell on me while a dagger felt to the ground right next to the body.
