Chapter 53: A Walk of Nostalgia

After the revelation, Kento felt no hesitation in picking the manual. It was going to be a great help to him and he knew that if it came directly from the system, it would have easily been an S or even higher graded skill.

"Since, you picked the manual… We can start our learning sessions next week." Susanoo said. "I will teach you a few things after that we will go to visit my sister."

"We are at a shortage of time, Kento." Inari said. "I hope you understand our situation."

Kento did not mind. While it could be a little hectic, if he was able to gain something from it –the difficulty did not matter.

After that, Tsukuyomi explained a little about the manual and how they developed all the techniques and weapons.

That was until Susanoo asked a certain question.

"Have you told the devils about your relation to us?" He asked, making the boy shake his head.

"Not yet. I figured the reveal would cause a lot of drama which I don't want to deal with just yet."

This made Inari chuckle a little. "Faction issues can indeed be bothersome."

"No, that is good," Susanoo said. "Do not reveal it yet. There will be a perfect opportunity for it soon."

Kento wasn't sure what the god meant. But Tsukuyomi figured the reason.

"You mean..."

The storm god nodded at his brother's realization.

"Indeed." He grinned. "I would love to see their faces when that happens."

Throughout her years of serving Susanoo, Yasaka had seen the Kamis take direct disciples only a handful of times. And that number was even lower for the Greater Kamis.

And when the boy walking next to her was chosen as a direct disciple, she was quite surprised.

"How long have you served Kami Susanoo, Lady Yasaka?" Kento asked as the Kitsune walked next to him.

"It had been centuries since I took over the position of his head servant." She explained. "Before me, he was served by an Oni."

"An Oni?" Kento was quite surprised upon hearing this. "Aren't they said to be evil?"

"Most of them are." The Kitsune explained. "However, my predecessor was a rather kind being. And also a very powerful being."

"How powerful?" Kento asked.

"Much more than me." She said. "However, he lost his life during a gruesome battle. This broke lord Susanoo but he had duties to keep and so I was appointed as his new head servant."

"I see." Kento nodded, wondering how many insanely powerful beings lost their lives in battles.

"Lord Susanoo did say that after me, he would like Kunou to succeed me." Yasaka had a loving smile on her face as she said this.

"Well that's nice." Kento said. "But she has time."

"She has a few centuries." Yasaka smiled.

"I haven't seen any male tine-tailed foxes. Is your husband not in Kyoto?"

The moment Kento asked this question, he saw Yasaka's face grow dark. Her pleasant smile turned into a sad one as she replied.

"He passed away right after Kunou's birth." Yasaka answered, making Kento's eyes widen.

"I-I apologize for asking such an insensitive question." He gave the Youkai leader a slight bow.

Yasaka shook her head. "It's alright. It has been over a decade now… Besides, you did not know about it."

Kento was unsure of how to proceed after hearing such a thing. But Yasaka noticed his uneasiness and decided to lower the tension.

"Male nine-tailed foxes are rare… Well both male and female nine tails are rare." She said. "However, my husband was not a Youkai but a human."

This was news to Kento. "Really?"

She nodded. "Nine-tailed foxes don't have to worry about their offsprings as even if they procreate with a human, their offspring will always be a full blooded Youkai."

"This does not apply to other Youkai, right?" He asked.

"It does not. Only Nine-tailed foxes have this ability."

Kento remembered that Kunou's description had nothing on it about her being a human when he used {Inspect}, which was enough proof to him.

Kento did not want to bring back bad memories for Yasaka, but he just could not help himself from asking a certain question.

"How did you two meet?" He asked, wondering about how a kitsune met a human lover.

This made her smile a little. "I met him when he stumbled upon the Youkai world by accident." She said. "He was given a pendant to keep Youkais away from him by some sage but instead, the pendant allowed him to see us."

"Oh?" Kento found it interesting how an item worked the exact opposite of what it was designed for.

"He was pretty cowardly." She chuckled. "Getting scared by everything. He was also naive and timid."

Kento noticed that despite pointing out all the negatives, she had a happy look on her face.

"But he was kind, honest and hardworking." She said. "With time, he grew on me."

Kento did not talk and let her continue her story.

"And before I knew it… We were in love." She showed him a bright smile. "And we had Kunou."

"Kunou is a sweet girl." Kento said as he remembered how she always asked him if he needed something, any time that he was here.

"It would have been nice for Kunou to have her father in her life." She said, keeping a smile and denying to show the pain in her face. "But humans are fragile."

That was true.

If not for the system, he would have died the moment he came across a fallen.

"But it's all in the past." She said. "Losing someone hurts, but you grow used to the pain."

"True." Kento sighed. "I have seen my mother breaking down after my father's death. But she knew that she could not remain weak as I was a child back then. She had to be the pillar for us both me and herself."

She has been a great mother and I can never express how much I respect her." Kento took a deep breath. "So, I respect you for everything you have done for Kunou."

This made Yasaka give him a pleasant smile. "I can understand why both Kami Inari and Kami Susanoo likes you. You are strong and rapidly growing stronger which is something that Kami Susanoo admires. And you have a kind heart which Kami Inari loves."

"Your praises are wasted on me." Kento chuckled. "I am just trying to survive out here."

"Don't worry." She said. "As as direct disciple, you will have protection."

"I hope so." Kento said.

Because soon he was going to be dragged into a lot of troublesome matters.
