After our meal the rest of the workday went as usual and before long it was time for us to head home.
"Are your grandparents still visiting?" The car ride home was not a silent one. We talked about lots of things. Mostly mundane stuff but it felt nice. Nothing pressuring like marriage alliances or business acquisitions but normal conversations.
"Just for a few more days. Honestly this is the most full our house has been in a while so having that energy is great. What about your family? I know you have your parents but what about the others?"
After the words left my mouth I felt a bit nervous about Deans reaction. His family was his biggest pride while also being a big strain for him. "Everyone is good. I am not sure if you have met her before but my maternal grandmother is planning to come down some time soon. She has not seen my mother in a long time, since my grandfather passed she resides in Spain. Her name is Alma Franco."
He smiled warmly, seemingly having good memories with his grandmother. "As for my paternal grandparents they are good. Last I heard they also resided in Spain. I think in Madrid but I am not too sure. It has been years since we last have spoken to one another. They do not agree with my life choices."
I thought he would be more bitter but it spoke about them as though it did not bother him that they have not spoken in a while. "Oh, sorry if I brought up a bad topic." I squeezed his hand which was laying on my lap while the other was on the steering wheel.
"Oh its fine. I have long since hashed out that conversation. Besides despite us not talking they are in agreement for my succession so in the end its whatever. They are very old school and traditional. I can't really fault them for their beliefs as much as they can't fault me for mine."
"That is a very mature sentiment." I patted his hand which made him crack a smile. Dean pinched my knee softly before asking me a question. "Have you ever been to Spain?"
I recalled back on my travels. Despite my wealth I have not really traveled a lot. Primarily because my mother hates planes so we usually do travels that can be done by car or train. The only times we have gone on a plane related to business travels. So those were unavoidable.
"Only once many years ago. My dad had some type of work conference so we went. In general it was an interesting trip. The food was interesting, the art and architectures were beautiful, but the weather was very hot. I got the worst sunburn ever so I ended up staying indoors the rest of the time."
As a red head, I am more prone to burning that probably most other people. Despite my mom constantly reapplying sunscreen every hour on the dot and even having a hat on. I still got very red from the sun.
Thankfully nothing super severe but I did peel heavily and wear aloe vera at all times so my skin could be soothed if the irritation.
"Damn thats tough. Spain is cool but yeah depending what time of year you went, the heat is brutal." In our current country, the weather is pretty stable and consistent, so experiencing the extremes is a unique exposure.
"So since both of your grandparents are in Spain did your parents meet there? Or is your family situation kind of like mine?" My family immigrated from Italy (at least on my dads side) many years ago but we have kept the ties to our home country by returning home when the inheritance is passed down.
Deans family was a mystery to me. Though we have met in the past, their strict and severe behavior made me not want to approach them unnecessarily. So my knowledge of them is either slim or conjectures I made based on the small amount of information I know.
"Eh kind of the same but not as punctual. My family usually visits Spain as often as we could, but its not a tradition or anything we just go to maintain our roots and culture but thats it really. Though to be fair, with how strict they are, I am surprised they have no formal rule about that. Especially since yours does."
"Hahaha thats very true."
By this point I noticed we arrived at my house so it was time to say goodbye. "See you later ok?" He unbuckled my seat belt and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Can't wait." He lingered for a moment before getting out of his car to escort me inside.
Truthfully, since Irene went with Dante I was not concerned about her making a comeback but I was worried about whether she made any friends while she was here. If she was truly over obsessing over me.
After one final goodbye, this time more formal as there were many watchful eyes. Dean left. When I walked in everyone was busy doing something. The grandparents were playing a board game while my parents were reading or watching TV.
However not even a second after closing the door did a chorus of hellos fill the entrance to the house. "Oh wait I have something for you." Mama Ines rushed up and held up a letter.
"This is from the Medici family. Don't worry it is nothing crazy but I think you would like to see what they said."
She pulled out the letter with shaky hands and while the others were still doing their games, the slightly slow movements and overall lowered voices told me they wanted to gauge my reactions. "Oh."
The contents of the letter were short and to the point.
"Dear Celeste D'Angelo,
We the Medici family are deeply sorry for what has occurred over the last couple of days. The young woman responsible is now in our custody so do not fret over her return. She will never leave here for as long as she will live. As for the marriage alliance with our son, Dante, his actions have been deeply disappointing to both our family and yours. As his penance, we voided any plan for marriage. Should you decide that you do wish to marry him later, we would welcome you with open arms. Any business ventures are open for us as well. Take care of yourself and may you find happiness and better health.
Take Care,
The Medici Family"
