Damon got to school early in order to avoid any confrontation from the school bully and the bozos who followed him around like flies followed poop. He peeked out the corner of the school gate to see if Clay was anywhere near the premises. Since he was nowhere to be seen, Damon calmed down and walked in.
"Where do you think you're going without my backpack slinthead. You're meant to carry it to class", Clay bellowed as he walked over to where Damon stood,
'Here we go again. He's probably gonna pound my head in this time.'
Damon braced himself for his daily rounds of beating as Clay approached him. Clay handed him the bag and since he was way taller than Damon, he had to bend to his eye level. Not that Damon was short; he was 5 foot 11 but Clay was more of a giant which was why he could bully people with weak powers or powerless like in Damon's case.
"You thought you could avoid me, didn't you?"
"N-n-no Clay." Damon shuddered as Clay grabbed his white hair and stared into his crystal blue eyes.
"It's boss, not Clay. How many times do I gotta tell you?"
"I'm sorry... boss"
"You better be. Now, I'm sure you brought what I requested for?"
Damon nodded his head meekly, opened up his backpack, took out his phone and handed it over to Clay. Clay did the transaction and 2000 dollars entered his account. With a wicked smile on his face, he returned Damon's phone to him. Damon was still waiting for his beating. Even though teachers were moving all around the block, if he were to start beating Damon, they wouldn't even bat an eyelid at his direction. They saw it as regular in a world where powers and technology mattered most. In other words, the strong ruled while the weak were trampled on.
"Well, get going, punk." Damon was shocked and at the same time happy that he was let off the hook without any serious damage. He walked off carrying the large backpack along with his own. His joy didn't last long as he felt a blazing heat from behind him. before he could comprehend what was going on or even try to dodge the attack, his jacket was set ablaze and so was his backpack. He fell to the floor and tried to put out the fire while students who passed by laughed their asses off. Eventually, he felt water wash over him. He turned to face Clay and the rest of his goons. They had stupid smiles plastered across their stupid faces.
"Wow. Now that was a good show. See you later punk." Clay jeered as they walked off. Damon knew the fireball was from Clay as he was a fire user and the water was from one of his goons called Jones.
Damon stood up. Dripping wet, he picked up the remnants of his scorched backpack and Clay's unsurprisingly untouched backpack and headed off to class amidst the taunts and jeers of other students who had been present at the scene. Damon was used to this as he had been mocked a lot for his powerlessness from childhood till now.
Before Damon entered his class after dropping off Clay's in his class, he took off the scorched jacket and tossed it into a nearby trashcan. He tried to arrange his frizzed hair to no avail. The burn had gotten to his black T shirt and left a hole in the back of it. There was nothing he could do about it so he walked to class that way.
He trudged to his seat at the left corner of the class which had a clear view of their school field and the houses beyond. He sat lazily in his chair and paid no heed to the students who were chattering as they walked in.
After some time, the teacher, miss Kelly walked in. She was young, around her twenties with hazel brown eyes and long brown hair tied back in a ponytail. She was a beauty that some silly boys couldn't help but toast although she was older than them. Miss Kelly sat at the teacher's desk and ignored the usual stares from the boys. She began to do the daily roll call to see if everyone was present. She called names and each of the students responded "present" to their names.
"Damon DeGrace"
silence
"Damon DeGrace"
more silence
"DAMON!"
Damon finally snapped out of his daze and looked up. He met miss Kelly's death stare which she was know for. "present," Damon said with a hint of annoyance in his voice like miss Kelly was a pian in the butt. He didn't maintain eye contact with her for long and turned to face the window he had been staring through. Miss Kelly rolled her eyes and continued with the names. Once she was done she stared her lessons. "Today we're going to be talking about casualties that occured in the first war, their causes and what can be done to avoid such an incident . . . ." Miss Kelly went on and Damon didn't even bother listening. Once class was over, all students were expected to head over to the training field to practice different types of skills such as archery, use of swords, spears, gauntlets, daggers and many others while there was also training for their normal powers like water, fire, earth, wind, ice and so on. However, this did not apply for Damon as he headed to his favourite place in the school: the rooftop.
"I honestly don't know why mom and dad made me come to this horrid place. I was better off being homeschooled". Damon thought as he looked over the city with a sad look on his face. Damon always acted like the mockery never got to him but deep down it hurt a lot. He spent a few hours there until it was time to go home. He didn't even hesitate to leave the school premises and luckily, he didn't encounter Clay.
Damon felt relieved to hear his baby sister's voice. "Yay Damon's back", Eloise said with glee as she embraced her brother in a big bear hug. She had blond hair in long pigtails with bangs and had the cutest gemstone green eyes. Damon loved his sister more than anything in the world and so did 5 year old Eloise. Damon went into the kitchen to meet his mother, Camille getting dinner ready."Hey baby. how was school today?" she asked as she diced up some carrots and put it into the pot. She had the same features as Damon and was astoundingly beautiful. "Not so great. Bully problem. As usual". Damon said. He let out a sigh and left the kitchen to his room to freshen up and come downstairs for dinner.
By the time Damon was done showering, he went downstairs to meet Eloise and his mom already seated at the dining table. Dinner was ready. Damon walked to his seat and sat down. He was ready to dig in because he was hungry and also because he loved eating although he still kept his athletic build. Before he could begin though, he asked,"where's dad? He hasn't been home in a long time now. what if he's seeing another woman mom?"
"Oh don't say that Damon. Your dad would never do that." Camille said to sooth herself although the prospect wasn't far-fetched.
Damon didn't like his dad because his dad had always seen him as worthless right from the day he was born. Another reason was because his dad saw Eloise as a cursed child. Eloise had complained that she saw hideous-looking monsters whenever she saw her dad and this angered Drex.
Damon simply assumed that Drex hated his family and always went on "business trips" to avoid his family. Sadly, it didn't affect them in the slightest because they weren't close. Also, they were stinking rich with their mom's money only.
As they ate, they talked about random things like Camille's day at work, Damon little fire "accident", which made Eloise and Camille giggle though they felt pity for him, Eloise's new jigsaw puzzle and other things normal families talked about. Eloise didn't go to school because of her monster problem. Since she was a born genius it wasn't really a problem. She spent her day fiddling with rubix cubes, fixing jigsaws and building her vocabulary. Camille was quite proud of her baby genius.
After eating, Damon did the dishes and they left to their bedrooms. Eloise slept in Damon's bedroom because of her nightmares which were related to the monsters.
Damon lay on his bed and thought about his future: a future without powers. It always ended badly. Some committed suicide while some were killed by those with powers. Damon didn't want that but there was really nothing to do about it.
Damon drifted to sleep trying to think of a solution to his problem.
