Chapter 1: One wish

As Velrin opened his eyes, he saw nothing but darkness and heard nothing but silence. Instead of feeling fear, he felt at ease, as if this was the state he was meant to be in. At least in this state, he had time to think without being rushed. Thinking about how uneventful his life had been thus far, after what seemed like a couple of minutes of silence, Velrin tried to look around only to realize that he had no body to speak of.

"So, that's why I can't see or hear anything. It turns out I don't have a body at all," Velrin thought to himself. Even though he was confused, he still wasn't frightened. He just assumed that this was some sort of realistic dream.

"False assumption, your physical body no longer exists. All that's left of your existence is a lingering soul." When Velrin heard this voice, he was shocked because he couldn't see anything, and he wasn't supposed to be able to hear anything. But this voice seemed to resonate and talk directly to his soul.

"Be at ease, mortal. An existence of your level won't be able to perceive my existence even if I was in front of you. So tell me, what wish do you want? You are only allowed a single one. Be wise."

That's when Velrin realized he was already dead. Although he still had some attachments to his old life, it wasn't anything soul-crushing, and he even got a wish in exchange for his mediocre life, which honestly didn't sound like a bad trade to him. "Are there any limits to the type of wish I want?" Velrin asked.

"Naturally, there are, but a being of your existence tends to have limited imagination and knowledge of anything with true essence," an indifferent voice that seemed to resound with his soul echoed.

At this point, Velrin was starting to get dissatisfied with the speech of this higher-order existence, but he didn't dare to show it, not that he could. "In that case, can I be reborn in the body of a Kryptonian?"

"Are you sure this is your wish? Like I told you, things are not as simple as your small mind makes them out to be."

"Yes, I am definitely sure this is what I want. I mean, what bad could possibly happen from becoming a better and higher-order version of myself?"

"Fine then, do not regret your decision as time passes." Although the tone was still indifferent, there was a slight mockery in it.

As soon as the words left its mouth, Velrin could feel what was left of him waver like ripples in a lake, and before he could let out a scream, his soul disappeared.

"Foolish mortal."
