“Miguel…” Nora called out after me as I rushed to leave the human dwelling. “Miguel, wait!”

But I couldn’t wait. Not after what Calista had told me. Not after what I knew. I rushed through the wooden brush, the pants of my slacks snagging on the briar thorns. I could hear Nora hot on my heels, hearing her call for me to wait. But my eyes were focused dead ahead as my cabin came into view.

Out of breath, I burst through the doors. Pausing only for a moment to kick my mud-crusted shoes off before pressing my way into the small guest room. The sight before me caught my breath in my chest. Nix, lay deathly still in the bed holding his mate. No. Not holding her. They were tethered together by black silken ribbon. Nix’s eyes were closed. His breath barely caused his chest to rise and fall.

“What did you do?” I asked Nora’s mother and grandmother who stared at me as if I was a wild wolf from the books of lore.
